INTRODUCTION
Microsoft Windows (also referred to as Windows or Win) is a graphical operating
system developed and published by Microsoft. It provides a way to store files, run software,
play games, watch videos, and connect to the Internet.
In general, a window is a fundamental part of a computer GUI (graphical user interface). A
window is an area of the display containing a single running application. The window can be
moved, resized, hidden, or maximized as desired by the user. The Microsoft Windows
operating system is named after this UI element.
Microsoft Windows was first introduced with version 1.0 on November 10, 1983.
An operating system or OS is software installed on a computer's hard drive that enables the
computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a
computer operating system, a computer and software programs would be useless.
With most computers, the operating system is stored on the primary hard drive inside the
computer. Computers operating systems can also be installed and loaded from
an external hard drive, disc drive, or flash drive.

When installing the operating system, the install files are stored on a CD, DVD, or USB flash
drive. Early computer operating systems used multiple floppy diskettes to install an operating
system.

The operating system on the computer is the program that starts when 17 you turn on the
computer. It performs the basic tasks required to use the computer, including interacting with
the computer hardware, scheduling tasks, and maintaining files. The operating system also
manages the other programs on the computer. If you are using a PC, you will probably have
one of the following operating systems: Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows
XP, Vista, Windows 7, windows 8 and windows 10 etc.

Introduction to Microsoft word

When you use a computer program to create, edit, and format text documents, you are
performing a task known as Word Processing. Part of the Microsoft Office 2013 suite of
programs, Microsoft Word 2013 is one of the most sophisticated word processing programs
available. By using Word, it is easy to efficiently create a wide range of business and
personal documents, from the simplest letter to the most complex report. Word includes
many desktop

publishing features that you can use to enhance the appearance of documents so that they are
visually appealing and easy to read.

You can use Word to:

 Create professional-looking documents that incorporate impressive graphics.

 Give documents a consistent look by applying styles and themes that control the font,
size, color, and effects of text and the page background.
 Store and reuse pre-formatted elements such as cover pages and sidebars.
 Create personalized mailings to multiple recipients without repetitive typing.
 Make information in long documents accessible by compiling tables of contents,
indexes, and bibliographies.
 Safeguard documents by controlling who can make changes and the types of changes
that can be made, as well as by removing personal and confidential information.
The program window contains the following elements:

 Title bar:-At the top of the program window, this bar displays the name of the active
document and provides tools for managing the program and the program window.
 At the left end of the title bar is the program icon, which you click to display
commands to restore, move, size, minimize, maximize, and close the program
window. To the right of the program icon is the Quick Access Toolbar, which by
default 36 displays the Save, Undo, and Redo buttons. You can customize the Quick
Access Toolbar to display any commands you want. At the right end of the title bar
are five buttons: the Microsoft Word Help button that opens the Word Help window;
the Ribbon Display Options button that allows you to entirely hide the ribbon, display
only the ribbon tabs, or display the ribbon tabs and commands; and the familiar
Minimize, Maximize/Restore Down, and Close buttons.
 Status bar: - Across the bottom of the program window, this bar displays information
about the current document and provides access to certain program functions
 By default, Word displays the Page Number, Word Count, Spelling And Grammar
Check, and Macro Recording indicators at the left end of the status bar. Each of these
indicators on the left displays at a glance the status of that feature; clicking any of
these indicators displays the related pane or dialog box. At the right end of the status
bar, Word displays by default the View Shortcuts, Zoom Slider, and Zoom Level

MS EXCEL
MS Excel is a commonly used Microsoft Office application. It is a spreadsheet program
which is used to save and analyse numerical data.
MS Excel is a spreadsheet program where one can record data in the form of tables. It is easy
to analyse data in an Excel spreadsheet.
How to open MS Excel?
To open MS Excel on your computer, follow the steps given below:

 Click on Start
 Then All Programs
 Next step is to click on MS Office
 Then finally, choose the MS-Excel option

What is a cell?
 A spreadsheet is in the form of a table comprising rows and columns. The rectangular
box at the intersection point between rows and columns forms a cell.
Cell Address
 The cell address is the name by which is cell can be addressed. For example, if row 7
is interested in column G, then the cell address is G7.
Features of MS EXCEL

 Home - Comprises options like font size, font styles, font colour, background colour,
alignment, formatting options and styles, insertion and deletion of cells and editing
options

category and a reader can add comments in this part
 View - Different views in which we want the spreadsheet to be displayed can be
edited here. Options to zoom in and out and pane arrangement are available under this
category

BENEFITS OF USING MS EXCEL

 Easy To Store Data: Since there is no limit to the amount of information that can be
saved in a spreadsheet, MS Excel is widely used to save data or to analyse data.
Filtering information in Excel is easy and convenient.
 Easy To Recover Data: If the information is written on a piece of paper, finding it
may take longer, however, this is not the case with excel spreadsheets. Finding and
recovering data is easy.
 Application of Mathematical Formulas: Doing calculations has become easier and
less time-taking with the formulas option in MS excel
 More Secure: These spreadsheets can be password secured in a laptop or personal
computer and the probability of losing them is way lesser in comparison to data
written in registers or piece of paper.
 Data at One Place: Earlier, data was to be kept in different files and registers when
the paperwork was done. Now, this has become convenient as more than one
worksheet can be added in a single MS Excel file.
 Neater and Clearer Visibility of Information: When the data is saved in the form of
a table, analysing it becomes easier. Thus, information is a spreadsheet that is more
readable and understandable.
Conclusion
Microsoft Word allows you to create simple word processing documents like letters and
reports effortlessly, allowing you to add color and clip art. Writing in various fonts and sizes
and using tables, borders & bullet formatting reduces tediousness and increases productivity.

It can boost your employability and career prospects, whilst also being a useful tool to
analyze data in everyday life, such as when managing personal finances. Excel is easily
accessible software that is a valuable tool in all aspects of life and should be considered
critical for personal development

Using macros in microsoft excel to facilitate cleaning of research data

Justin Bauzon , Caleb Murphy , Sandhya Wahi-Gururaj
Background: Retrospective chart review studies may be delayed by inability to export clean clinical
data from an electronic medical record (EMR) or data repository. Macros are pre-programmed
procedures that can be used in Microsoft Excel to help streamline the process of cleaning clinical
datasets.
Objectives: To demonstrate how macros may be useful for researchers at community hospitals and
smaller academic health centers that lack informatics support.
Methods: Using an intrinsic function of our institution's EMR, vital signs and lab results from 20
individual hospitalizations were exported to a spreadsheet. Two macros were developed to sort
through these datasets and output them into a specified format. The speed of macro-assisted data
cleaning was compared to manual transcription.
Results: Time spent on data cleaning was significantly reduced when using macro-assisted sorting
compared to the manual approach for both vital signs (46.5 seconds versus 12.3 minutes per record, a
94% reduction; P < 0.001) and labs (13.7 seconds versus 2.6 minutes per record, a 91% reduction; P <
0.001).
Conclusions: Macros offer a flexible and efficient tool for cleaning large sets of clinical data,
particularly when an institution lacks informatics support or EMR functionality to export clinical data
in an analysis-ready format.
