CONCEPT

✓ Doing the review of related literature serves many functions.

✓ The purpose of reviewing the literature is to be able to identify existing
issues about the study.
✓ Proper documentation is a powerful indicator of your own commitment
to scholarship and the sense of authority that you bring to your writing.
Good documentation demonstrates your expertise as a researcher and
increases your readers’ trust in you and your work.
✓ Visual research map or table can help a research writer organize all
data and ideas relevant to the study.

Discussion
Review of Related Literature

As a researcher, one of your first tasks is to situate or locate your

proposed study in the existing broader or larger body of literature. Does your
study build on, extend, or refute existing studies? Or does your research
replicate other studies that have been done already? Will your research apply,
test, or develop theories?

By situating your research in the larger body of literature or existing

knowledge, you get a sense as to whether your study builds on existing
studies, replicates studies done already, or offers an entirely new area of

inquiry. Hence, the review of related literature is an important task that you
need to accomplish as part of your research training.

Doing the review of related literature serves many functions:

1. It shares with the reader the results of other studies that are closely
related to the study being reported (Fraenkel & Wallen, 1990).

2. It relates a study to the larger, ongoing dialogue in the literature

about a topic, filling in gaps and extending prior studies (Marshall &
Rossman, 1989).

3. It provides a framework for establishing the importance of the study,

as well as a benchmark for comparing the results of a study with other
findings (Creswell 1994, 20-21).

The purpose of reviewing the literature is to be able to identify the following

issues:

1. What is already known about this area?

2. What concepts and theories are relevant to this area?

3. What research methods and research strategies have been employed

in studying this area?

4. Are there any significant controversies?

5. Are there any inconsistencies in findings relating to this area?

6. Are there anu unanswered research questions in this area? (Bryman,

2008, 81).

Four practical suggestions by Creswell can help you out in undertaking

your literature review. These suggestions include tips and tools to aid you in
preparing and writing your review of related literature. These are:

1. Establish priority for searching the literature.

2. Delimit the scope of literature review.

American Psychological Association (APA) Style of Documentation

One of your most important jobs as a research writer is to document

your use of source material carefully and clearly. Failure to do so will cause
your reader confusion, damage the effectiveness of your paper, and perhaps
make you vulnerable to a charge of plagiarism. Proper documentation is more
than just good form. It is a powerful indicator of your own commitment to
scholarship and the sense of authority that you bring to your writing. Good
documentation demonstrates your expertise as a researcher and increases
your readers’ trust in you and your work. Samples of bibliographical entries
following the APA (6th edition) style are provided below:

References in the body of your essay

The APA in text reference is in the format (author, date). When directly
quoting from a text you must include a page number in the citation as given
in the examples below. Including page numbers in all other circumstances is
not required however, it is best practice to do so when referring to part of a
work (e.g. a paragraph or chapter in a book). When referring to an entire work
that covers a single topic (e.g. a journal article) it is not required.

Referencing an idea

• Anxiety and depression have been identified as more commonly in

children and adolescents with long-term physical conditions (Dantzer,
2003; Pinquart & Shen, 2011). or

• Dantzer (2003), Pinquart and Shen (2011) all state that anxiety and
depression have been identified as more commonly in children and
adolescents with long-term physical conditions.

Referencing a quotation

• Indeed, one researcher commented that “technological innovations

have saved or extended the lives of many patients” (Lumby, 2001, p.
44).

Citing a source within a source

Where your source quotes or refers to another source, for example

Unsworth refers to previous work by Halliday on linguistics, the citation might
read thus:

• (Halliday, as cited in Unsworth, 2004, p. 15)

Only Unsworth will appear in the Reference list at the end of your
assignment

Reference List

Your reference list should be ordered alphabetically by author and then

chronologically by year of publication. The APA 6th style requires the
references to be indented as illustrated below in the examples.

For instances of multiple articles with the same authors and years of
publication, please check the APA publication manual or Academic Writer. If
you have the DOI for the journal article, you should include it in the reference,
otherwise, it is not necessary.
