PRACTICAL RESEARCH I- G11

Quarter 3 – Week – 7
Competency: Synthesize information from relevant literature
Lesson: Review of Related Literature and Synthesis

Objectives:
1. Understand the ethical concerns in qualitative research.
2. Familiarize oneself in writing thematic literature review.
3. Present a Concept Map Thematic Literature Review.

CONCEPT
✓ Gaddi (2019) mentioned the judicious use of related literature and
studies must observe research ethics. He went on to say that a
researcher must possess two important qualities.
” a. Intellectual humility - This academic, and at the same time
intellectual, trait allows the researcher to have the “consciousness” of the limits
of ones’ knowledge”. Intellectual humility embraces the indispensable thought
that prevents us from pretending to be ‘know-it-all” in all aspects of our
academic life”.
“b. Intellectual integrity – This is the state of being whole.
Integrity is the most of time, the virtue of excellence. A researcher who upholds
the value of integrity recognizes the work of others through citations.

Four Simple Rules for Writing a Literature Review

(Source:MarcoPautassoPublishedDocumentonline:2013https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1003149)

Reviewing the literature requires the ability to juggle multiple tasks,

from finding and evaluating relevant material to synthesizing information
from various sources, from critical thinking to paraphrasing, evaluating, and
citation.
Rule 1: Define a Topic and Audience
How to choose which topic to review? There are so many issues in
contemporary science that you could spend a lifetime of attending conferences
and reading the literature just pondering what to review. On the one hand, if
you take several years to choose, several other people may have had the same
idea in the meantime. On the other hand, only a well-considered topic is likely
to lead to a brilliant literature review.

Rule 2: Search and Re-search the Literature

After having chosen your topic and audience, start by checking the
literature and downloading relevant papers.

Rule 3: Take Notes While Reading

If you read the papers first, and only afterwards start writing the review,
you will need a very good memory to remember who wrote what, and what
your impressions and associations were while reading each single paper.

Rule 4: Choose the Type of Review You Wish to Write

After having taken notes while reading the literature, you will have a
rough idea of the amount of material available for the review. This is probably
a good time to decide whether to go for a mini- or a full review. Some journals
are now favouring the publication of rather short reviews focusing on the last
few years, with a limit on the number of words and citations. A mini-review is
not necessarily a minor review: it may well attract more attention from busy
readers, although it will inevitably simplify some issues and leave out some
relevant material due to space limitations.

Rule 5: Keep the Review Focused, but Make It of Broad Interest

Whether your plan is to write a mini- or a full review, it is good advice
to keep it focused. Including material just for the sake of it can easily lead to
reviews that are trying to do too many things at once. The need to keep a
review focused can be problematic for interdisciplinary reviews, where the aim
is to bridge the gap between field
It is important to always go back to your problem statement and identify
your themes of your variable when writing a related literature.

The example lists down the problem statements to which each theme is
cited.

2. How does the Neuroticism B. Neuroticism

3. In what particular manner do the D. risk or conflict with the law.
children at risk or conflict with

4. What plans must be taken in E. plans to prevent juvenile

Psychological Theories and
Mechanisms

The table illustrates the thematic approach in writing review of related

literature and studies. It must be based from the appearance of variables of
the problem statement. In the above example, there are five (themes); the
emotional stability, Neuroticism, juvenile delinquent, risk and conflict with
the law.

What is Thematic Approach in Literature Review?

In a thematic literature review, the author organizes and
discusses existing literature based on themes or theoretical concepts he or
she feels are important to understanding the topic.
It allows you to discuss your sources in terms of the themes or
topics they cover. Also, it enables you to demonstrate the types of topics

important to your research. Thus, this approach forces you to summarize
your sources.
The table below illustrates how the themes may be conceptualized as
far as thematic approach in literature is concerned. The enlisted themes are
drawn from the problem statement cited by Gaddi (2019) while the Concept
Map is adopted from UAS fall (2013) as presented by Ann Jones.
Concept Map Example of Thematic Literature
SOURCE THEME
1. Padilla (2019) A emotional ability
2. Ramaley (2018) B Neuroticism,
C juvenile delinquents
3. Ree (2019)) A emotional ability,
B Neuroticism
4. Cruz (2018) A emotional,
B Neuroticism
C juvenile delinquents
5.Abad (2020) C juvenile delinquents
6. Clart (2020) C juvenile delinquents,
D prevention plan against
juvenile delinquents.
Indicated on the left column, there are six primary sources, 1, 2, 3, 4,
5 & 6. On the right column, there are four themes, A, B, C, and D. In the first
source, it has discussed the theme A. As I continue reading the second article
I have, I found out the two different themes about B and C. I looked back and
read another article again, and I found A and B were discussed on it. As I
continue to read the source 4, I came across the themes A, B, and C. The
source 5 covers theme C. Source 6 covers the theme C again and it also
discusses theme D. Note that in mapping your concepts, it is imperative to
read and analyze if the source can help you organize the literature
review. Once you have your themes, organize them in a way that makes sense
to your research. Make sure the order of presentation is based on the
appearance of the problem statement.

Directions:
Focusing on the problem statements of your research study, let us find
out what may be included in developing your review of related literature
and studies. Draw a Concept Map below with necessary responses and
determine which of your sources can help you develop your themes in
a thematic way of writing literature. You can follow the template below
or you can create your own Concept Map of Thematic Literature.
