CH5014 Interfacial Science & Engineering (Quiz-2)

19-3-2020 (8.00 – 8.50 am.) (Total Marks 20)

Marks will be given only if symbols, mathematical steps, and plots are clearly shown.

1) For spreading of B on A show that SB/A = WAB - WBB. What is the condition for spreading to
occur. (1+1=2)

2) (a) Give the mathematical conditions on the solid-liquid Work-of-Adhesion and on the Work-
of-Cohesion (of liquid) so as to cover the entire range of contact angle. Rationalize the
physical aspects. (1x3=3)

3) (a) What are the two molecular approximations/conditions that form the basis of Good-
Girifalco-Fowkes-Young (GGFY) contact angle model for wetting of a liquid on solid
surface ? (b) Write the defining mathematical relation for γAB in this model. (c) Write the
form of the model equation for contact angle for the following cases: (i) both liquid and solid
being non-polar (ii) liquid being non-polar and solid being polar. (2+1+1+1=5)

4) (A) For adsorption of n-octane (γL = 21.6 erg/cm2) on PTFE (i.e. Teflon), take θ = 26 o , πo =
1.8 ergs/cm2. Using Fowkes approximation calculate the solid surface tension for PTFE
without taking into account the effect of πo. (B) Using the conventional value of 19.5
ergs/cm2 for γSd for a non-polar solid surface wetted by a polar solvent, calculate the
dispersion component γLd of the surface tension of the solvent by neglecting the πo term.
Take θ = 115 o. Surface tension of water is 72 ergs/cm2. (3+4=7)

5) Define Specific Heat of Wetting. Briefly discuss its importance for determination of the
chemical nature of the solid surface. (3)
