CE3050: Basic Design and Steel structures

Tutorial-04
Date: 10-03-2023 Time: 11:00-12:00

1. Design a 3 m long single angle tension member to support a dead tensile

working load of 120 kN and a live tensile working load of 166 kN. The member
is to be connected to the gusset plate through one leg with 20 mm diameter
bolts (at least four in a line @ 70 mm center to center). The slenderness ratio
should not exceed 300. The structural steel is of grade fy-250 N/mm2 and fu-
410 N/mm2 as per IS:226-1975.

2. A tension member consists of two ISA 8080 ( t = 6 mm) angles bolted to a

12 mm thick gusset. Determine the design tensile strength of the member,
section efficiency, and the number of bolts required to develop the full
capacity of the member when the angles are connected to:

(a) opposite sides of the gusset, i.e., one on each side of the gusset plate as
shown in Fig (a),

(b) the same side of the gusset plate as shown in Fig (b); the members use a
single line of 20 mm bolts of grade 4.6 and are tack bolted.
