Onomatopoeia - The use of words


that imitate the sound they
describe.
Example: "The clock tick-tocked
loudly."

Irony - The use of words to


convey a meaning that is opposite
of its literal meaning.
Example: "The fire station burned
down."

Symbolism - The use of symbols


to represent ideas or qualities.
Example: "The dove is a symbol
of peace."

Foreshadowing - A hint or clue


about what will happen later in
the story.
Example: "As she walked into the
dark alley, she felt a chill run
down her spine."

Imagery - Using vivid and


descriptive language to create
mental images in the reader's
mind.
Example: "The sun was a fiery
orange ball sinking into the
horizon, casting long shadows
across the empty beach.")
