Desired Outcomes

Introduce audience to application of IoT and Machine Learning in upstream oil and gas industry
and give insight on how to prepare to master the IoT and Machine Learning technology
The Challenges of Upstream Oil and Gas
Industry

Operations Optimization Main Issues

• The need for more non-physical data the conventional
sensors cannot capture
Images courtesy of Deloitte Report on IoT implementation in O&G • Billions of USD losses from Non-Productive Time
(NPT) to structure and analyze the data (weak data
management)
• High volume of unstructured data (~1.5 TB/day) that
does not deliver the needed insights
• Increasing operational expense from aging assets
(reactive maintenance cost, foot print reduction, etc)
• Depleting production from aging reservoir
• Many more…..

Some of these challenges can be solved by adopting IIoT & Machine

Learning in the Operations
What is Industrial IoT (IIoT)?
The Industrial Internet of Things (Industrial IoT) is made up of a multitude of devices
connected by communications software.

The resulting systems, and even the individual devices that comprise it, can monitor,
collect, exchange, analyze, and instantly act on information to intelligently
change their behavior or their environment -- all without human intervention.

IIoT is not a new discipline…

It is the evolution of existing technologies…

IIoT’s roots are in SCADA…

What is SCADA?
SCADA is an acronym for
Supervisory Control and
Data Acquisition.

It is software and
hardware that can be used
for process control and
gathering real time data
from remote locations for
exercising control on
equipment and conditions.

Both SCADA and IIoT perform the following function in industrial setting
• Plant and process system monitoring
• Industrial process and machine control (manual and automated)
• Data collection and analysis
• Alarm monitoring and notification
• Reporting (real-time and historical)

Are IIoT and SCADA the same?

No, their prescribed implementations are very different

In short, IIoT is open & easy to integrate while SCADA is closed & proprietary
which ultimately leads to ….
HIGHER COST!
IIoT begins where SCADA and PLC end

• Information generated from SCADA systems acts as one of the data sources for IIoT.
• SCADA’s focus is on monitoring and controlling.
• Whereas, IIoT is more focused on analyzing machine data to improve productivity
• IIoT is essentially a culmination/peak of advances in the connectivity of hardware and
data networks that SCADA provides.
• IIoT leads with the capability for cloud computing and bit-data processing  Machine

What is Machine Learning?
 Machine learning is a branch of artificial
intelligence (AI) focused on building
applications that learn from data and
improve their accuracy over time without
being programmed to do so. It trained a
sequence of statistical processing steps
to find patterns and features in massive
amounts of data in order to make
decisions and predictions based on new
data.

 AI is a broad term that aims at using

data to offer solutions to existing
problems. Some example solutions:
 Classification
 Prediction
 Estimation
 Association
 Optimization
 Clustering

 The objective of Machine Learning is to

gain knowledge from data
Most Machine Learning Algorithms are “Supervised Learning” where the data
set has historical input-output relationship that act as reference in learning
