Aristotle’s ideas of civilization

The 21st century, paradoxically, is wrestling again with the same old questions, “What
is civilization?” What is barbarism?”, “What does it mean to be civilized?” and how to
resolve different views on culture, religion, civil society, and order and peace. No matter
how strange it may seem, it is Aristotle, from the distant 4th century BC, who can provide
numerous sensible answers and solutions rather than modern thinkers. Aristotle never
asked the same questions overtly but a careful re-reading of his texts reveals a very
responsible attitude and a serious constructive consideration of the same topic. Aristotle,
who constructed methodology of thought, founded logic, designed ethics and laid the
foundations of science, art, history and philosophy, actually outlined the pathway
of civilization. He demonstrated how to become civilized without directly naming
“civilization” or explaining the terms. He compared man and animals, different men and
different modes of Being with the purpose of building a perfect society, above and away
from barbarians and suitable for civilized man.

Text: 19 little things that can get you arrested in another country

Skim the banned actions that happen in different countries. Choose five that are the
most peculiar ones according to you and write a short idea about each in IF sentences:

E.g. If you sing in the Canadian subway, they can take you out for disrupting the order

1. If you smoke or drink in public places in Ukraine, they can arrest you

2. If you wear high heels in Greece, they can fine you

3. If you connect to someone else's wifi in Singapore, they can fine you or put you in jail.

4. If you smoke vape or any electronic cigarette in Thailand, they can fine you or send you
to prison.

5. If you chew gum in Singapore, they can fine you or arrest you.

Write the grammar structure that you used in the sentences above:

That means that we have to consider some rules:

- If the subject is He, she it we add an –s- or an -es to the verb

- If the sentence is negative we use auxiliaries:
don´t or doesn´t + the verb in simple form
- After auxiliary verbs (can, could, must, may…) the verb in infinitive

According to these rules, complete the next rights and obligations of a citizen:

1. If a person pays ( pay) his/her taxes, he/she gets (get) social benefits
2. If the government does not use (not/use) the citizens’ contributions for
common well, citizens complain (complain) about its functions
3. A citizen does not have (not/have) the right to vote if he/she is not registered
(not/register) in the INE
4. If you spend (spend) 5 years in some foreign countries as Canada, you
can get (get) the citizenship, but you don´t have (not/have) some common
rights such as voting
