Background

In morden life, with rising awareness of health benefits, people are consuming
more herbs or taking dietary herbal supplements, among other self-care options,
because they are safe and has no or very minimal side effects. Perilla is one of the
most popular herb in Asian for both its culinary and medicinal value
So in this afternoon we want to give you some information about perilla and its
application in morden life
We’ve divied our presentation into 3 parts. First, I’m going to talk about

Characteristics of perilla; Second, TA will talk about. Health benefits and


applications of perilla.; and Third, Notes on using perilla will be presented by VA

of perilla

Perilla is an annual short day plant which originated in China and Indian
highlands. Since ancient times Perilla has been grown in various Asian regions, such
as Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Nowadays, it is grown extensively and has been used
widely as an ingredient for flavor and spice for foods as well as in traditional
medicine.

Perilla is a bushy annual aromatic herb, belonging to the mint family,
Lamiaceae. It may be further subdivided into sevaral species but the most common
species is Perilla frutescens. There are both green-leafed and purple-leafed varieties
which are recognized as separate species by botanists

The stems are branching. Its cross-section is square and covered with short hairs.
Lá,
The Leaves grow opposite, green to purple that are oval with serrated margins. Its
surface is hairy and has a distinctive musky.
Hoa,
The Flowers are small, bell-shaped, and white or purple that grow in clusters.
Quả, Hạt
The Fruits are grey with small seeds and contain 38–45% fixed oil, have a slightly
pungent taste.

Perilla has warm nature and pungent flavour so All parts of the plant are used in
Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Herbs contain many ingredients, and they may work together to make beneficial
effect. Many factors determine how effective a herb will be, like the type of
environment (climate, soil quality) also how and when it was processed.
Approximately 400 different bioactive compounds in Perilla, major compounds
are alkaloids, terpenoid, acid phenolic, ,.. These compounds are known to be
biologically active and antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects.

NEXT
As mentioned above, with characteristics, Perilla has been used not only for foods
but also for their medicinal properties. So, to know more about its application in
modern life, let’s move onto next part, which will be presented by Trúc Anh.
