I. Objectives:
1. Describe changes in properties of materials when exposed to certain conditions
such as temperature or when mixed with other materials (MELC Q1W4-5) S4MT-
1gh-6
1.1 Describe what happens to materials when heated and cooled.
1.2 Differentiate the changes of the properties of materials when heated
and cooled.

a.5 Motivation
Everybody reads the poem.
 Have you read the poem entitled “Mom’s
Magical Hands”?

Mom’s Magical Hands

By: Abegail Jean B. Causing

During this pandemic,

Mom’s hand shows magic.
Milk, flour, eggs, and butter
Are enough to feed your hunger.

She mixed them in a bowl

Surely, this can also feed your soul.
Pre-heat the pan and let the butter melt
As how my heart melts from her love that I felt. Some pupils will raise their hand to
give the answer.
Mom told me to sit
Because her magic is ready to eat
She put ice cubes on my soda for me to slurp
Yummy! No wonder why it made me burp

 What do you think did mom made?

 Why does the butter melt?
 Why do you think your mother always
cook for your meal?
 How will you show your appreciation to
your mother?

B. Developmental Activities

b.1 Activity

 This time I want you to arrange the The pupils will participate by giving

pictures and meaning.
 The name of this game is “4 pics 1 word”

Mechanics:
1. The class will be group into 4 and they
will be provided with a board and a chalk.
2. A picture will be shown.
3. Each group will be given 5 seconds to
think and write the answer on the board.
4. The pupils must wait for the teacher’s
signal “boards up” before raising the
board.
5. Fail to follow the instruction will be
disqualified on that particular item.
6. Every correct word earns 5 points.
7. The group with more points will be the
winner.

Picture #1

AHTE
It is the quality of being hot; high
temperature

Picture #2

LETM
This means make or become
liquefied by heat
Picture #3

LOCO
This means at a fairly low temperature

Picture #4

OLDISFIY
The process of making liquid becomes
hard or solid.

 Good job everyone! You are now familiar

with the word heat, melt, cool and solidify.

b.2 ANALYSIS

 I have a question, who among Eman will raise his hand.

you here loves to draw?
 From what material do you
think crayons are made of?
 Let us follow the numbers and
arrows. This is how crayons Wow! We are exited to see it ma’am.
are made of.
1. Crayons start as solid wax.
The heated wax becomes a liquid.
Then it can be poured

2. Colored powder is mixed in.

Each tub of wax gets one color.

3. The hot melted wax poured into a

mold.
The mold has little tubes.

4. The wax in each tube cools.

It turns back into a solid.
Now it is a crayon.

5. A label is glued around each crayon.

A crayon of each color goes into a box.

It’s time to color!

 Another

Pupil: The process of heating can change solid materials into liquid form.
 Let me give you this situation:
 Barbie wants to make a
homemade heart-shaped
chocolate bar for her teacher as a
gift for the celebration of World
b.3 ABSTRACTION
Teachers’ Day. Let us study the
process of making and molding
chocolate bar.

Process of Making Chocolate Bar

Teacher: What made chocolate bar solidify?

Pupil: The process of cooling can change liquid materials into solid form.
 So based on our activity how would Heat ma’am is the transfer of energy from a

hand.
 When things heated, they changed
their size, shape and texture. They
also change in form. Particles move
about more and take up the room
when heated- that’s why things
expand when heated. When heated,
some solid materials are changed
to liquid.

HEATING

When cooled, liquid materials changed

to solid. Best example is an ice cube
melting under heat and solidifies when
cooled.

COOLING

b.4 APPLICATION

-Varied Activities

 Each group will be given 15 minutes to finish the task.

 Rubrics will be used in giving points

Group 1. “Brain Works”

 Heating and cooling can cause materials to change. Some materials can exist as both
a solid and liquid.
 Look at the materials below and write in your paper what has caused them to
change their phase (heating or cooling).

A. Observe the illustration thoroughly. Based from the illustration, answer the table
below. Describe the changes of property of the material using the guide question.
Underline the correct answer.
GuideB.
Questions:
1. What is the phase of the butter before being heated? (solid, liquid, gas)
After being heated? (solid, liquid, gas)
2. Why did the butter change its form? (heated, cooled)
3. How can you apply this in your daily life? (this is helpful in cooking, recycling materials etc.

Guide Questions:
1. What is the phase of the water before being cooled? (solid, liquid, gas)
After being cooled? (solid, liquid, gas)
2. Why did the water change its form? (heated, cooled)

B Write the importance of heating and cooling. Make at least 5 sentences.

Rubrics:
Connection to the topic – 10 points
Grammar - 5 points
Total = 15 points
