iPlan No.: 99 Quarter: 1 Duration: 50 min. Monday
Learning Express concentration of solutions quantitatively by (S7MT-Id-3)
Competencies preparing different concentration of mixtures according to
uses and availability of materials
Subject Distinguishing dilute from concentrated solutions qualitatively and quantitatively
Matter
Key Concepts The concentration describes the relative amounts of solute and solvent in a given volume of
to be solution.
Developed
Knowledge: Distinguish dilute from concentrated solutions qualitatively and quantitatively
Learning Skills: Prepare concentrated and diluted solutions
Objectives Attitudes: Work on the problems with honesty and accuracy
Resources APEX Chemistry Solutions. Unit 2. Chapter 1. Lessons 6-7.
Activity Pictures of different product labels are shown to the class.
(Introductory Questions:
) 1. What is the significance of the values you can find on the label of the products?
It indicates how concentrated the solution is.
Activity Concentration – describes the relative amounts of solute and solvent in a given volume
(Presentation) solution.
Concentrated solution – when there is a large amount of dissolved solute for a certain
volume of solvent
Dilute solution- has a small amount of dissolved solute in comparison to the amount of
solvent.
Percent by volume- amount of solute in a given volume of solution expressed as grams
solute per 100 milliliter of solution (g/100ml)
Percent by mass- which is the amount of solute in a given mass of solvent expressed as
grams per 100 grams of solution.

Percent by mass is the ratio of a measured mass of solute to a measured mass of solution.
On the other hand, percent by volume usually describes solutions in which both solute and
solvent are liquid.
(Refer to Activity attached)
1. How to describe the concentration of a solution?
Analysis One can describe the concentration of a solution qualitatively or quantitatively through
percent by mass or percent by volume.
Show labels of alcohol and vinegar.
2. What does 70% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol mean?
70% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol means the solution contains 70 mL alcohol.
3. What does 5% acidity mean in the label of vinegar?
Vinegar is often labeled as “5% acidity,” which means that it contains 5 grams of acetic acid
in 100 g of vinegar.

Abstraction Labels of products sold often show the concentrations of solutes expressed as percent (%)
by volume or mass. The alcohol used as a disinfectant is a solution of 70% ethyl or
isopropyl alcohol, meaning 70 ml alcohol. These are solutions sold as 40% ethyl or
isopropyl alcohol.
Vinegar is often labeled as “5% acidity”, which means that it contains 5 grams of acetic acid
in 100 g of vinegar.
Percent by mass is the ratio of a measured mass of solute to a measured mass of solution.
On the other hand, percent by volume usually describes solutions in which both solute and
solvent are liquid.

Application What are some common solutions you use in your house?

How will you identify their concentration?

Assessment From the given Activity, answer the following in your activity notebook.
1. Compare the number of drops per volume of water and vice versa in each bottle.
The lesser the drop of food color, the lighter the color and the solution is more
diluted.
The lesser the solvent, the darker the solution and it is more concentrated.

2. What is the significance of adding solute or reducing the solvent?

Concentrated solutions can be prepared either by adding more solute and keeping the
amount of solvent the same or keeping the amount of solute the same and reducing
the amount of solvent.

Assignment Collect a product sample with label of their concentration from your house and bring them
tomorrow.

Activity 1

Objectives:
The students will be able to;

1. Distinguish dilute from concentrated solutions qualitatively and quantitatively

2. Describe the concentrations of solutions qualitatively and quantitatively

Materials:
Food color
Water
Transparent bottles (4 pcs)
Dropper

Procedure (Part 1)
1. Label the clear, transparent bottles with numbers 1 to 4.
2. Place one drop of food color in bottle #1.
3. Add 50 mL water to the food color in bottle #1 and stir the solution.
4. Place 10 drops of food color in bottle #2. \
5. Add 50 mL water to the food color in bottle #2 and stir the solution.
6. Show the class bottles #1 and #2 and ask them to differentiate the two bottles.

Procedure (Part 2)
1. Place one drop of food color in bottle #3.
2. Add 20 mL water in bottle #3 and stir the solution.
3. Place one drop of food color in bottle #4.
4. Add 100 mL water to the food color in bottle #4 and stir the solution.
5. Show the class bottles #3 and #4 and ask them to differentiate the two bottles.

Activity Review previous lesson.
(Introductory Pictures of different product labels are shown to the class.
) Questions:
1. What is the concentration of the product based on their label?
2. What did you use to find the concentration?
Activity
(Presentation)

1. How to express the concentration of solutions in a quantitative manner?

Analysis It is through percent by mass and percent by volume.
2. How to solve for the percent by mass? percent by volume?
In solving for the percent by mass and percent by volume, divide the mass or volume of
solute with the mass or volume of solution and multiply the quotient with 100.

Abstraction All portions of a solution have the same concentration. The composition of one part is also
the same as the composition of the other parts. But the concentration of solutions can be
changed. This means you can prepare different solutions of sugar in water of different
concentrations. In the same way, you can prepare different solutions of salt in water.
Percent by mass is the ratio of a measured mass of solute to a measured mass of solution.
On the other hand, percent by volume usually describes solutions in which both solute and
solvent are liquid.

Application Using the solution products brought by the students, identify the concentration based on
their label.
Assessment Solve for the unknown. Show all work and report answers with units.
1. What is the percent by mass of 5.0 g of iron (II) sulfate dissolved in 75.0 g of water?
__5.9g_ = 0.08 x 100 = 8%
75.0 g
2. A solution is formed by adding 35 g of ammonium nitrate to 250 g of water. What is the
percent by mass of ammonium nitrate?
