This Self-Learning Kit is an innovative tool that helps and guides you to
identify the important properties of saturated and unsaturated solution.
For better understanding of the different concepts provided on this self-
learning kit, let me remind you first of the following:
1. Examine carefully the self-learning kit objectives.
2. Keep the self-learning kit clean. Do not write unnecessary words or
drawings that are not related to the topic.
3. Read all instructions well and follow them for better results, and please do
not skip anything.
4. Try to answer the different activities to the best of your ability in the answer
sheets provided for the learners .
5. Go back and reflect on what you’ve gained and missed.

Investigate
properties of unsaturated and saturated solutions (S7MT-Ic-2)

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

1. differentiate the properties of saturated and unsaturated
solution;
2. classify some examples of solutions as saturated or
unsaturated ; and
3. appreciate the importance of saturated and unsaturated
solution in our daily lives.

1
Imagine that your mother asked you to prepare a juice
for a snack time. She gave you 1 sachet of powdered juice to
dissolve in water.

Using the pictures given , identify the science concept

below that corresponds to the given illustrations by filing in
the box with the appropriate letters to decode the correct
answer.

substances.

In the previous activity, you had learned that the

powdered juice is the solute, which is the component in
smaller amount while water is the solvent, which is the
component present in a greater amount. When solute is
dissolved in solvent, solution is formed.
However, there will be a time when a solute cannot be
dissolved in a given amount of solvent. This is because of
solubility of the solute.

 A solution can be classified as saturated and unsaturated.

 A solution that contains the maximum amount of solute dissolved by a given
amount of solvent is called saturated.

2
 It is understood that saturated solution has been achieved when any
additional solute will no longer be dissolved, thereby resulting in solute
particles settling at the bottom.
 A solution is unsaturated when it contains less solute than the maximum
amount it can dissolve at a given temperature.
 Every combination of solute and solvent has a limit, and moreover once after
reaching that limit, that substance is said to be in a specific state called as
saturation point.
 Unsaturated solutions have the ability to dissolve more solute in a solvent until
they reach the saturation point. After reaching the saturation point, solutes
cannot be dissolved by the solvent and these are the unsaturated solution.

Basing from the short discussion, here are some of the

examples
SALT of saturated and unsaturated solution that we
encounter in our daily lives.

SALT

At 25˚C, a saturated solution table salt has only 36.0g (3 tablespoons)

when dissolved in 100 ml of water. Any additional table salt will no longer
dissolve by the solvent.

Here are the key concepts for you to be remember on this self-
learning kit;

 Solvent is the component of the solution that is greater amount.

 Solute is the component of a solution that is in lesser quantity.
 Saturated is a solution that containing as much as of the solute as it can hold at
a given temperature.
 Unsaturated is a solution contain less solute that it has the capacity to dissolve.

Try to analyze the situation given below and answer the

question to the best of your ability.

Imagine that your mother asked you to prepare coffee for snack time or
“merienda”. You knows that she wanted it to taste moderately sweet. Due to
multi - tasking on that afternoon, you missed to focus on what you’re doing. You
happened to put extra spoonful of sugar. For sure your mother would really
know what you had done and that it would taste very sweet and she could also
see the undissolved sugar at the bottom of the cup.
Guide Question: What will you do to solve the problem?
