Hi dear student! I am here to help and guide you in learning the physical
changes of matter! I will be with you from the start until the end. I hope that
you will enjoy understanding this topic because in studying this “Ikaw ang
Bida Dito!” So are you ready to explore the world of the physical changes of
matter? If yes, then let’s explore it.
Here’s a simple guide for you in going about this learning kit:
 Read and follow the instructions carefully.
 Accomplish the provided activities honestly.
 Read each lesson and do the activities provided for you.
 Perform all the activities diligently to help and guide you in
understanding the topic.
 Take the self-test after each lesson to determine how much
you understood the topic.
 Answer the assessment to measure how much you have
gained from the lessons.

Learning Competency:
Explain the physical changes in terms of the arrangement
and motion of atoms and molecules.
Code: S8MT-IIIc-d-9

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

identify the physical changes of matter in terms of the
arrangement and motion of atoms and molecules;
value the importance of physical changes of matter;
and
present examples of matter that show physical
changes

2
Last week, you have learned the phases of matter and
their properties. Now, before we proceed to the next
topic, kindly do first the activity below.

Pre-Activity: Name That Thing

Directions: Give the name of matter being described to you below. Write your answer
on the space provided for.
1. Give two solid objects that you can see inside your aparador.
___________________________________________________________________
2. Give three examples of liquid found in the kitchen.
___________________________________________________________________.
3. Give an example of gas in the surroundings.
___________________________________________________________________
4. Enumerate the five phases of matter.

Study the four pictures below and identify what is common

among them. Write the word in the space provided.

In the previous activity, you observed that matter

underwent changes. Matter is everywhere. It is anything that
takes up space and has mass. It is constantly experiencing
changes. There are two types of change in matter: physical
change and chemical change. But for this week, we will be
focusing our attention on physical change of matter.

A physical change modifies the form of a substance

but does not change it to another substance. This means
Definition of Term that it never changes the identity of the matter ONLY:
Its size or shape changes;
Condensation It dissolves;
-this is a process
It changes the phase (freezes, boils,
evaporates, condensates, sublimates)
where a gas is Physical changes occur when matter changes its
changed into a property but not its chemical nature.
liquid Physical property changes could also include a change
in: texture, color, volume, mass, weight, and density.
Evaporation
In a physical change, atoms are not rearranged and the
matter’s physical and chemical properties are unchanged.
-the process by
which the
molecules on the
surface of a liquid
break away and
change into gas

Sublimation pi
-this is a process
where a solid is
changed into a gas

Freezing
-a process in which
a liquid is changed
to a solid Unripe banana Ripe banana

Melting
- a process in which
a solid is changed
to a liquid

Ice Water
4
To give you a clearer idea on the physical changes of matter,
here are some examples. You need to study them well to be
able to do the exercises in the next page.

5
Accomplish the following activities to check whether you
understand the lesson or not. Good luck!

Sawing wood
Crumpling a tissue paper
Activity 1
Am I Physical, Physical ?
Directions: Classify each process if it undergoes physical change or not. Write PC if
it undergoes a physical change and NPC if it does not. Use a separate sheet of
paper for your answer.

Process Answer
1. Mixing salt into water
2. Cutting pineapple into pieces
3. Burning leaves in your backyard.
4. Wood rooting
5. Perfume evaporating
Breaking glass in your skin
6. Sawing wood
7. Ironing your clothes
8. Charcoal heating a barbecue Cutting banana into pieces
9. Mixing a buko salad
10. Digesting food

Activity 2
Name It!
Directions: Give at least five examples of matter that undergo physical change which
you have seen or experienced. (2 points each). Use a separate sheet of paper for
your answer.

1. ______________________________________________
2. ______________________________________________
Boiling water
3. ______________________________________________ Milling of rice
4. ______________________________________________
5. ______________________________________________

Activity 3
The MATTERial That I Created
Directions: Create your own material or matter that undergoes physical change. (e.g.
used brochure as a flower vase). It’s up to you on what material will you use. Be
creative! Below is the criteria/rubrics in grading your output.
