CHEMISTRY (Process Approach)

I. Objective
At the end of the lesson, the students should able to:
a. Discuss the difference between physical and chemical change
b. Appreciate the importance of trhe knowledge on physical and chemical change
in our life through citing its application in our community
c. Write at least 5 examples of chemical and physical changes of matter.
II. Subject Matter
a. Concept: Physical change and chemical change
b. Processes: Defining, differentiating, appreciating, observing, critical thinking
c. Values: Inquisitive mind and cooperation during the group activity
d. Background of the lesson:
The lesson is all about changes of matter
Physical change- is a change which occurs in size, shape, color, texture, state,
magnetic or electrical condition but the molecular composition remains but totally
unaltered.
Chemical change- a change which the molecular composition totally altered, that
is change in which a new product is always formal.
III. Materials
*visual aids- graphic organizer *candle stick and matchstick
*illustration board
*pentel pen
IV. Procedure
a. Motivation
Class, I have here a piece of paper and a candle with a matchstick. All you
have to is to tear the paper into small pieces and burn the candle through a
matchstick. I need two volunteers from the class. After you had performed the
activity try to explain what happened to the piece of paper and to the candle.
Those are on their sits, try to observe your classmate’s work.
b. Presentation
1. Show materials
- look and analyze these different visual aids given and put it on the board
to its designated properties of matter.
- name it properties of changes matter based on the item that being
shown.
2. Raising of problem / question
- can you see if there is difference in shape, size color if the candle can be
heated.
- what changes you can see if the paper is drop into a glass with water.
c. Group work
for each group, write your answer.
Get an illustration board and chalk
Give and write your answer to the item that being shown.
Finalize and raise your final answer
For the second activity
Observe how the candle change (physical or chemical change)
(to the teacher. You will have to guide the pupil’s step by step as the activity are
going on.
d. Comparison and abstraction
What were your observation is giving the activity to the pupil, in
differentiating the example of properties of matter?

Example of Properties of Matter

Crushing a can Melting an ice Breaking glass

Physical Change Grp 1, Grp 2 Grp 1, Grp 2 Grp 1, Grp 2
Iron rusting Cooking an egg Baking a cake
Chemical Change Grp 1, Grp 2 Grp 1, Grp 2 Grp 1, Grp 2
Let us see the result of the first activity as shown on the table
Which group get the highest score in differentiating the properties of matter.
Based on your observation to activity 2 what generation can you give about the
physical change and chemical change. (the generation given by the pupils can
be written on a sheet of paper for better and easy understanding.)

E. Application
- ho can we use the different properties of matter in our daily living? Like in
cooking recycling things.
V. Evaluation
A. How did you work with your group members?
b. On a sheet of paper do the following.
1. What is physical change? Give about 5 examples
2. What is Chemical Change? Give about 5 examples
3. Differentiate chemical from physical change.
VI. Assignment
½ crosswise
Research on the phase changes of matter and differentiate one from the
other.
