What is Gender Studies
Gender studies, a contemporary interdisciplinary field encompassing

women’s and feminist studies, critically examines ways in which
gender, ethnicity/race, sexuality, religion, ability, and class intersect
and are constructed within popular culture, art, literature and digital
media. This important discipline offers the chance to learn about
historical and contemporary feminist movements and about the forces
both gender and ethnicity/race currently exert in society.
Gender studies is multidisciplinary in nature as it draws upon a

number of subjects to create a paradigm that is open to all types of
interpretation. An understanding of the social, cultural and biological
setup of gender in our society creates a lot of space for gender studies
to integrate with other disciplines. As gender studies takes its roots in
the difference between individuals based on their social upbringing
and their genetic background as well as the psychological inclination;
therefore the inter-relation with sociology, biology and psychology is
self-evident.
WHAT IS MULTIDISCIPLINARY?
The process whereby the researchers from different disciplines work
independently or sequentially, each from a discipline-specific
perspective, to address a common problem.
GENDER STUDIES AS MULTIDISCIPLINARY

Historically the roots of Gender Studies can be traced in social sciences
and humanities disciplines. Gender studies is multidisciplinary in
nature as seeks to study different disciplines/ social sciences i.e.
anthropology, economic, politics, sociology, and others from the
perspective of gender.
WHAT IS INTERDISCIPLINARY?
The process whereby researchers from different academic disciplines
work together to address common problem, and yet continue to do so
largely from their respective disciplinary perspectives.

GENDER STUDIES AND ITS RELATION TO OTHER DISCIPLINES

Gender studies is related to a number of disciplines. These disciplines
vary from sociology, psychology, anthropology and even biology. With
a deep understanding of the social roles and how they integrate into
society the studies of the following disciplines creates a wider scope of
understanding of gender studies.
a. MULTI DISCIPLINARY NATURE OF GENDER STUDIES
1. Sociology
Sociology is a systematic study of society and social interaction. It

studies human culture and social relationships and institutions.
Gender studies and sociology are correlated as the study of gender

identification in a society cannot be explained without delineating the
role of gender in society. The sociology of gender examines how
society influences social construction of the gender, role observance
our understandings and perception of differences between
masculinity and femininity.
2. Anthropology
Anthropology is the scientific study of humanity, concerned with

human behavior, human biology, cultures and societies, in both the
present and past, including past human species.
Gender studies is a branch of cultural anthropology as it deals with

cultural norms that dictate the lives of people belonging to the
masculine and feminine gender. The cultural norms and values that
are prevalent in society dictate how a female or male behaves in a

social setting. Gender studies analyzes the growth of the individual
and his or her evolving roles in the society as a male, female or queer.
3. Psychology
of 9 
The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially
those affecting behaviour in a given context is called psychology.
The response to gendered stimuli such as the appropriate language,

dress code and modes of recreation can be easily studies through the
psychological analysis.
Gender psychology explores psychological and social impact of sex
differences, sex roles, and the development of gender identity on
behavior. It examines historical antecedents of gender differences,
development of gender identity, and sex differences in performance,
attribution, achievement, cognition, interpersonal behavior,
psychopathology, and response to therapy to illustrate facts and
fictions in gender research. These perceptions are the ones driving the
motives and behaviour of males as becoming more work oriented and
females becoming more social. Moreover, the psychological pressure
from peers, parents and society of fitting into a particular gender
mould is what creates the gendered world that we see today.
4. Economics
Economics is a social science concerned with the production,

distribution, and consumption of goods and services. It studies how
individuals, businesses, governments, and nations make choices about
how to allocate resources.
It explains the economic role played by women at both the household

and national levels. Participation of women in the labor force, wage
differentials, and occupational distribution by gender, as well as
determinants of women’s active economic participation, and their
contribution to national development.
Gender differences are pronounced in the economic sector with men
securing highly paid jobs and women facing a crunch in the financial
sector. The financial dependence of women on their male family
members limits their freedom and their choice of a career. Whereas
gender studies tries to understand the different ways in which one

section of society is marginalized based solely on their sexual
orientation.
5. Political Science of 9 
Political science is the scientific study of politics. It is a social science

dealing with systems of governance and power, and the analysis of
political activities, political thoughts, political behavior, and associated
constitutions and laws.
Gender studies analyzes the emerging role, from a feminist

perspective, socio-political barriers that have made women the
“majority minority” or “silenced majority.” Includes barriers such as
discriminatory legislation, political folkways, sex and gender roles,
and myths that have created and perpetuated a maledominated
society and hurdles for women in politics.
After the French revolution the voting rights were only bestowed upon
privileged male white men. Susan B. Anthony was the first female
activist to challenge this notion. Genders studies plays an important
part in highlighting the political role of women and their constitutional
rights. In the present day women leaders such as Jacinda Arden and
Sanna Marin the prime ministers of New Zealand and Finland are
making a change in the political, economic and educational policies to
support an egalitarian system throughout the world. This is the change
that gender studies seeks to outline and analyse throughout its
academic development.
6. Social Work
Social workers are professionals who aim to enhance overall well-

being and help meet basic and complex needs of communities and
people. Social workers work with many different populations and
types of people, particularly focusing on those who are vulnerable,
oppressed, and living in poverty.
Social workers intersect Gender Studies in many ways, from treatment

for domestic violence, to locating support for single mothers, to
ensuring equality for women worldwide. Social workers may seek to
combat human trafficking and slavery, intervening in victims' lives
with recovery programs and ongoing supports.

7. Literature
Literature is defined as books and other written works, especially

those considered to have creative or artistic merit or lasting value.

Fiction, and Journalistic Literature are the main types in Literature.
Gender and literature examine the ways in which women writers

address the particular circumstances of women’s lives during
particular decades. It traces the construction of gender as depicted in
literature and other cultural productions. It explores the diversity of
women’s writing by including the works of best -selling writers,
women of color, working-class women, and radical experimentalists.
Provides students with an historical, social and cultural context in
which to locate various works. It also attempts to explore how
contemporary how writers present gender and gendered experiences,
and how the construction of women is staged in a variety of cultural
contexts.
8. History
Gender history is a sub-field of history and gender studies, which looks

at the past from the perspective of gender. It is in many ways, an
outgrowth of women's history. The discipline considers in what ways
historical events and periodization impact women differently from
men. Gender historians are also interested in how gender difference
has been perceived and configured at different times and places,
usually with the assumption that such differences are socially
constructed. These social constructions of gender throughout time are
also represented as changes in the expected norms of behavior for
those labeled male or female.
Those who study gender history note these changes in norms and
those performing them over time and interpret what those changes
say about the larger social/cultural/political climate.
9. Education
Education is the biggest tool that defines the gender roles in society.
Gender studies seeks to improve the overall perception of gender
development through the academic arena. With a wide range of
gender appropriate subjects, gender studies moves out of the domain
