Strain

Deformation

• Change in shape and size

• May be visible or unnoticeable

• Cause: Force / temperature

• Not uniform throughout volume

Normal Strain

• Change in length of a line per unit length

Normal Strain

• Change in length of a line per unit length

𝜖𝑎𝑣𝑔 = 𝛿/𝐿
Normal Strain

• Why need strain? Why not deflection?

Normal Stress vs Strain

𝜎 = 𝑃/𝐴

𝜖 = 𝛿/𝐿

Shear Strain

• Change in angle between these two line segments

is referred to as shear strain
• Deformations causing change in direction
• This angle is denoted by 𝛾 (gamma) and is always
measured in radians (rad), which are dimensionless
• if 𝜃ሖ is smaller than 𝜋Τ2 the shear strain is positive,
whereas if 𝜃ሖ is larger than the shear strain is
negative
State of Strain Component
Small Strain Analysis

• Most engineering design involves applications for which only small

deformations are allowed
• Thus, the normal strains occurring within the material are very small
compared to 1, so that 𝜖 ≪ 1
• Often referred to as a small strain analysis
• Can be used to approximate
• sin 𝜃 = 𝜃
• cos 𝜃 = 1
• tan 𝜃 = 𝜃
• Provided 𝜃 is very small
