QUESTION:
Think about current issues in Pakistan and
internationally – how can these issues affect PR?

ANSWER:
We know current Issues in Pakistan are never-ending but to
name some, Pakistan suffers from Environmental issues,
inflation, lack of professionalism and awareness, rising terrorism,
propagandas, poverty, lack of private sectors, faulty education
system, pervasive corruption,… if we sum up these never
ending issues, Pakistan looks like a spoiled rich kid who is
taking money from his uncle and spending it on all glitters which
is not gold. The above stated current issues negatively portrays
the image of Pakistan w.r.t public relations, due to past
transgressions of “Problematic economic era” of Pakistan the
after affects are still there, no other country except China or two
promotes it’s relation to next level with Pakistan, two-way
communication between a Pakistani and foreigner is becoming
difficult due to lack of literacy and understanding of English
language (lingua franca) by an average Pakistani. Lack of
professionalism in Pakistan within agencies ceases PR with
international agencies as professionalism and proactive
communication is a major part of PR which sabotages a high
quality relation. What is PR? According Google “PR is the
practice of managing the spread of information between an
individual and organization and the public”, If a person cannot
understand international language how will he make decisions
from the international news/information. PR is good at: informing
consumers rather than promoting products; earning trust rather
than buying time; developing conversations rather than delivering
messages. That’s not to say public relations people won’t have to
learn some new skills (or for those with long memories, re-learn
some old skills, dating back to the early days of the profession).
They will need to be better listeners, because management wants
them to hear—perhaps more critical. They will need to develop
tools that deliver unique and important consumer insights, and
use research more effectively to inform strategy and planning.
They will need to develop superior metrics, and more. How can
Pakistan maintains its education wise PR when the core areas
are not fully pollution free, if they want to send a press release
stating “Come study in our peaceful country Pakistan” while
terrorism is rising it will be justified as false PR. Economic issues
affect PR to a great strength. Many scholars have pointed out the
historical association between public relations and propaganda.
That link is still fresh in Latin American countries such as Chile,
parts of Africa, Asian countries including China and the
Philippines, and Eastern European countries such as Poland,
Slovenia, Romania, and Russia.
