 Read chapter 8 and 9
 Review Suzy’s short notes
 View the Talk the talk and excel screen capture videos
 Complete the study guide

Learning Outcomes
These problems are designed to help you:
1. Accurately calculate intervals for various data types (CO4)
2. scrutinize and interpret results and draw meaningful conclusions (CO4)
3. present your data and results in a way that is concise, visually appealing, and provides
information to the reader (CO5)

Instructions and Expectations

Do the following 5 problems. Focus on the interpretation of the results. Remember to include
notes on the limitations of these measures where appropriate. Each question is worth 2 point.
Total point value for this problem set 10 points:

1. The American Restaurant Association collected information of the number of meals

eaten outside the home per week by young married couples. A survey of 60 couples
showed that the mean number of meals eaten outside the home in a week was 2.76,
with a standard deviation of .75 meals per week. Construct an 80% confidence interval
for the mean number of meals these couples eat outside the home. Give an
interpretation of your results.

2.76 ± 1.296 (0.75 /
confidence interval = 109.95 to 220.37
I am 95% confident that the number of full time enrolled students of the business
schools  will be between 109.95 students and 220.37  students

2. Dr. Wordz is a Professor of English. Recently he counted the number of misspelled

words in a group of student essays. For a class of 40 students, the mean number of
misspelled words was 6.05 and the standard deviation was 2.44 words. Construct a 90%
confidence interval for the mean number of misspelled words on student essays. Give
an interpretation of your results.

3. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) reported that the mean number of
hours spent per week on coaching and recruiting by college assistant football coaches
during the season was 68.6! This information came from a non-normal distribution of 20
coaches and had a standard deviation of 8.2 hours. Construct a 98% confidence interval
for the mean number of hours spent coaching and recruiting by these coaches. Give an
interpretation of your results.

4. The Human Relations Department of Electronics, Inc. would like to include a dental plan
as part of their benefits package. But how much does the typical employee and his or
her family spend each year on dental expenses? A sample of 10 employees was
conducted and found that the mean amount spent last year was $1,820.00, with a
standard deviation of $660.00. Construct a 99% confidence interval for this t-
distribution. Give an interpretation of your results.

5. Merrill Lynch Securities and Health Care Retirement, Inc. are two larges employers in
downtown Toledo, Ohio. They are considering jointly offering childcare for their
employees. They want an estimate of the mean weekly childcare costs paid by their
employees. A sample of 10 employees who use childcare services showed the average
(mean) expenditure to be $298.60 with a standard deviation of $25.54. Find an 80%
confidence interval for the mean weekly childcare expenses of the employees. Give an
interpretation of your findings.
