WELP HATCHERY Our Story
Since 1929, Welp Hatchery has been offering high quality chicks at fair prices to our
customers. On March 30, 2016, International Poultry Breeders, Inc. - an Iowa
corporation - acquired the assets of Welp Hatchery which are being used for ongoing
operations in Bancroft. Our goal is to be your one stop service for all your poultry
needs.
Our specialty is Cornish Rock Broilers. We also offer a very wide variety of egg layer
types, rare and unusual breeds, bantams, ducklings, goslings, turkeys, guineas,
pheasants and chukar partridges. To help you care for your poultry, we have books,
equipment, vitamins and more available.

Welp Hatchery speciali es in

Cornish Rock Broilers. These
are fast growing, meat-type
chickens grown and raised by
thousands of Americans across
the country. We often use the
term e plode when referring
to their rapid growth, as they
are in the 5-6 pound dressed
weight range at 49-56 days.
Due to their fast growth rate,
they should be managed a little
bit differently than other
breeds and will be ready to
butcher around 6-8 weeks of
age. About 90 of our Cornish
Rocks are sold as straight run
chicks which means you
should have early fryers at 5-6
weeks of age. For roaster
weights 8-10 pounds dressed ,
take pullets to 12-15 weeks of
age and dress them out.

WELP HATCHERY Poultry Care: Preparation Tips
How you start and grow your baby chicks and other poultry is very important. From Welp you will receive the finest
chicks and poultry that modern breeding can produce. If you feed and manage them along the lines outlined here,
they should perform e tremely well. If you cut corners at any point, the chances are good that it will cost you in the
long run. We are providing this information so that you can ma imi e the performance of your Welp poultry. We
hope this is helpful. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us.
The brooding area must be thoroughly cleaned,

disinfected and free of poultry for 7-10 days if possible.
1. BE L TTER Peat Moss and/or Wood Chips are

best. Be sure 2-3 inches of bedding covers the area where
chicks will be.
2. EAT Start the chicks at 95 degrees. Drop the

temperature 5 degrees per week until down to 70
degrees and/or until no heat is needed. If using heat
bulbs, figure two - 125 watt bulbs for 50-100 chicks. eep a
thermometer at chick level so you can manage the temp.
Also, be sure you have room in the area you keep them so
that they can all be under the heat lamp or out from the
heat if they need to.
3. ATER Provide the chicks with only water for the first
hour after their arrival. To each gallon of water, add one-
fourth cup sugar. Let them drink this water for one hour
before providing them with feed. Start with two - 1-gallon
waterers per 100 chicks. Figure one linear inch of

4. FEE See feed and other requirements listed for each poultry type on this page. ay special attention to feed
recommendations for ornish ock roilers.
5. RAFT EL Before chicks arrive place a shield of corrugated paper, baled straw or hay around the area where
the chicks will be started. This is particularly important during cold starting periods.
6. FL R A EL T Figure one-half square foot per bird for the first two weeks. Then increase to one square foot
after that. Heat lamps will provide heat/light during the early growing period. After that a 25-40 watt bulb should be
sufficient.
7. RE AT R uard against domestic or wild animals getting into your poultry operation. If your building isn t
sufficiently tight your poultry may become a series of nice meals for animals.
WELP HATCHERY Poultry Care: Preparation Tips
Start Cornish Rock Broilers ust like other baby chicks on a 20-22 Chick and/or Broiler Starter. eep them on that
ration for the first 4.5-5 weeks. At that age, switch them to an 18 Chick Grower. Provide 3 inches of feeder space and
1 inch per chick of watering space. You will full feed your broiler chicks around the clock for the first 5 days of age.
At 7:00 P.M. of the 5th day, make sure your broiler chicks are completely out of feed. That means there is no feed in
the feeders from 7:00 P.M. of the 5th day of age until 7:00 A.M. the following morning. You want them out of feed for
12 consecutive hours. Water, yes, but no feed.. NOT EVEN A THIMBLE FULL! Continue this minor feed restriction
program removing the feed every night until time of slaughter. Failure to follow this feeding program may result in
heart attacks. Sudden Death Syndrome or FLIP is the result of very rapid growth. Following the above restriction
outline, will reduce FLIP substantially. Regardless of location in the U.S., you must follow this feed restriction
program. For people living in higher elevations mountains , it is VERY IMPORTANT that feed restriction be practiced.

Broiler Starter for the first 5 weeks and then switch to
a 20 Grower to finish them on.

Turkeys are not the easiest birds to get started. Start
and grow turkeys on 28 Turkey Starter for the first 8
weeks; 20-21 from 9-14 weeks; and then go to a 16
Turkey Finisher. If turkey feeds are not available, it is
fine tarting them on 20 Chick Starter for the first 10-
12 weeks and then finish them on an 18 Grower with
limited feeding of cracked corn/whole oats on the
side. Try to use medicated feed. Figure 2 inches of Waterfowl can be started on an 18-20 Duck and
feeder and 2 inches of watering space per bird for the Goose or Chick Starter. At 3-4 weeks of age, switch

The White Rock, Barred Rock, Rhode Island Red and New Hampshire Red all have good meat
qualities, as well as efficiency in laying eggs.
One rooster to appro imately 8-12 hens. Like breeds should be kept isolated for 4-7 days to
ensure fertility.
Straight Run chicks are chicks that have not been se ed. They are shipped as hatched and
should be around an equal amount of males/females, although there is no guarantee. Pullets
are female chicks. Cockerels are male chicks.
The quickest way is to use our secure online shopping cart. You can also call your order in or
complete the Order Form using your credit card information. If you do this, we can book your

order immediately. We accept Mastercard, Visa and Discover. Another option is to send us a
money order prior to shipment. We would need to receive the money order before we can
book the chicks. We do not ship C.O.D.
There are no additional postage or handling costs! The price you see per chick is the only cost
you will have. There are no shipping tables, weight charts, etc. to worry about!
Your chicks are shipped via the United Stated Postal Service using Priority Mail. They should
arrive at your local post office about 2-3 days later. For e ample, if the hatch/ship date is
Monday, your chicks should get to you on Wednesday or Thursday of that week. There are
some occasions when your chicks could even arrive the ne t day, so it s best to be prepared

service, we cannot control the time/day that they arrive.
They are bo ed in specially made cardboard bo es with holes in the sides for proper
ventilation. We have minimum order quantities so that there are enough chicks to produce
enough body heat to make the trip safely. We bo them according to the weather. In the
warmer months, we cut back on the number of chicks per bo to ensure they do not get too
warm.
We will provide you with healthy, quality chicks. Live delivery is guaranteed. We often put
e tra chicks in the bo es, so be sure to count your live chicks. We will not replace e tra chicks.
For arrival guarantee, please phone us immediately if you have any problems when the chicks
arrive. We must be notified within 48 hours after arrival or we cannot issue credit or send
replacement - no e ceptions.
