Significant Standard Changes 45th Edition

*New or significantly changed sections are highlighted in yellow. Rationale is provided for each.

Addition to Historical Introduction

NEW:
In 2023 the American Poultry Association celebrated its 150"' anniversary. Now well into the
21st century, the place of Standard Bred poultry has evolved and taken on a whole new
importance. With significant advances in agricultural systems and a rapidly growing population
it is increasingly important to maintain the integrity and vitality of Standard Bred poultry as
they are a valuable genetic resource that is a repository for many important traits that are not
found in modern commercial strains. By maintaining Standard bred poultry in their true to type
and productive forms, the Standard Bred breeder is doing their part to contribute to the
ongoing food security of generations to come. Standard Bred poultry are a very tangible
representation of our shared heritage as they are a reflection of the time and place in which
they were developed, and of the people and factors that have shaped their development along
the way. The American Poultry Association continues to be the steward of these priceless
resources and is committed to their continued preservation and improvement for future
generations.
RATIONALE: To reflect the changes to the importance and purpose of Standard Bred Poultry
since the last time this section was edited in the mid 19005.

Interpretation of Standard for Judges, Breeders and Exhibitors - Size and Weight
NEW:
Item (b) removed.
RATIONALEi To remain consistent with other proposed changes to disqualifying weights.

Additional to Interpretation of Standard for Judges, Breeders and Exhibitors - Importance of

Feather Quality
NEW:
The following general feather descriptions for various classes apply to females and to
such sections of the males which generally conform to the feather type of the female with the
exception of Frizzles, Silkie Bantams and Sebastopol Geese.

a) Cochin: Feathers should be broad, long, soft and fitting loosely to the body. Fluff is
relatively long and abundant.
b) Brahmas: Feathers should me more compact and without the fluffiness when compared
with Cochins.
c) All Americans, All English except Cornish and Redcaps, All French, All Miscellaneous,
Langshans, Belgian Bantams, Booted Bantams, and Japanese Bantams: Feathers should
be moderately broad and long, fitting fairly close to the body.
d} All Mediterraneans, Redcaps, Northern Europeans, Polish, Rosecomb Bantams, Dutch
Bantams, Sebright Bantams, Nankin Bantams and American Sera ma Bantams: Feathers
moderately broad and long, fitting rather close to the body.
e) All Games, Malays, Shamo, As eel and Ko Shamo: Feathers should be short, rather
narrow, hard and firm, with as little fluff as possible, fitting very close to the body.
f) Cornish: Feathers should be close fitting and hard as in Games, but wider.
g) Sumatra, Cubalaya, Phoenix and Yokohama: Feathers should be long, moderately broad,
hard and firm, fitting fairly close to the body.
h) Silkie Bantams: Feathers should be long, very soft and fluffy without the barbs, barbicels
and barbules knitted together and fitting loosely to the body.
i) All Waterfowl except Toulouse and Sebastopol Geese: Feathers should be firm,
moderately broad, fitting rather close to body, producing a smooth, water-proof
surface.
j) Toulouse Geese: Feathers should be broad, moderately soft, fitting rather loose to body.
k) Sebastopol Geese: Feathers in curled sections should be long, broad and curly, lacking
stiff central shafts.
l) All Turkeys: Feathers should be long, broad, hard and fitting rather close to the body.
m) All Guinea Fowl: Feathers should be moderately broad and long, moderately soft and
fitting fairly close to the body.
RATIONALE: To increase the scope of this section to encompass all recognized breeds of poultry
in the Standard of Perfection including Waterfowl, Turkeys, Guineafowl and Bantam breeds
without a large equivalent.

Breaking Ties
NEW:
Item (5) removed.
RATIONALE: To remain consistent with other proposed changes to disqualifying weights and
breed specific details in Call Ducks, Cornish Bantams and Beltsville Small White Turkeys.

Disqualifications
NEW:
General Weight Disqualifications removed. Note, breed specific weight disqualifications still
apply e.g. Beltsville Small White Turkey.
RATIONALE: Due to scales not being utilized commonly in the show hall, this disqualification is
impractical to apply. lt cannot be verified or proven without the use of a scale. The point cuts
for weight still apply and can be applied until all points ascribed to that section are cut. e.g. A
Brahma Bantam Pullet that weighs 3802 will receive 0 points in the Size and Weight section.

Turkeys
Addition of Instructions for Judges section.

Turkeys should be judged first and foremost as a meat class with the greatest importance being
placed on market characteristics and weight. Body capacity, carriage and symmetry are key
components that directly correlate to meat yield and longevity of breeding birds.

In order to properly ascertain weight and musculature the birds must be handled. The keel
should be straight and well embedded in breast muscle. Body capacity is determined primarily
by examining the back, sides and abdomen. The back should be flat, and broad its entire length.
The upper back should be flat between prominent shoulders. A convex profile to the side of the
body is an indication of spring of rib and greater body capacity and it typically correlated with
good heart girth. Depth of body should be carried well back through the keel toward the stern.
Plumage should be moderately tight so as to not disguise the form of the body.

Symmetry and balance are best assessed when the bird is observed walking. When on the move
and at rest the bird should show no tendency to tilt forward or display any unevenness or
stillness of gate. The breast should be carried parallel to the back, with legs evenly placed on
the outside of the body to produce a balanced stance with the desired forty-five degree (45°)
back line.
RATIONALE: To provide clear guidance for judges and exhibitors on the importance and proper
technique for judging turkeys.
