3. Processing of Glues

! Cold Glue
The following basic rules must be observed when processing dispersion glues /
starch adhesives / dextrin adhesives:

" Selection of Glue

Before commencing to use a new type of glue, a check must be made whether:
- the viscosity of the glue is such that it can be reliably processed with the unit
- the requirements in terms of setting time, adhesive force etc. will be fulfilled
with it.

For your Information

The data sheet prepared by the manufacturer of the glue provides
information on the viscosity, methods of processing, areas of application
and storage of the glue. This data sheet should be obtained from the glue
manufacturer. Its recommendations should be observed without fail.

" When changing the type of glue

the following measures must be taken:
- fill the pressure tank with suitable cleaner*
- clean all parts which come into contact with glue thoroughly
- flush out the unit completely with suitable cleaner*
- fill the pressure tank with new type of glue
- fill the system completely with new glue
* suitable cleaner is in most cases water (max.40°C)
or an according solvent.

" Functional Description Electric Application Guns

Working elements of this guns are:
• coil
• spring retaining armature
• closing needle
• nozzle
• stroke regulator

- The closing needle closes the nozzle seat when not actuated.
- Glue is under pressure at nozzle seat.
- An electrical pulse at the coil opens the armature against the spring and lets
emerge glue through the nozzle.
- after electrical pulse, the armature closes with help of the spring.
- the flow of glue is stopped.

- you can set the amount of glue within certain limits by help of the stroke
regulator.

HINT:
To receive optimum gluing results, you should reduce amount only
slightly by the stroke regulator.
You can influence amount of glue also by glue pressure.

! Handling and Operation

" Operating-Elements Gun DLK-40X

Setting quantity of glue
The quantity of glue can be set by proper selection of the following parameters:
- nozzle size
- glue pressure
- armature stroke

Armature stroke (ratched lock):

The armature stroke is set with the ratched lock. It provides an additional method
of regulating the quantity of glue, e.g. by matching the outputs of a number of
cold-glue application guns to one another.

Pic: Armature stroke (ratched lock)

" Initial Operation DLK-40X

♦ Setting the basic stroke

IMPORTANT !
Set the stroke only while the nozzle is in operation (nozzle test). Otherwise the
nozzle seat can be damaged. Do not tighten too tightly. This can cause damage
to the nozzle and armature.

Basic stroke
- Turn the knob of the ratched lock (2) carefully clockwise until the stop position
is reached.
- Turn the knob back half a turn counter-clockwise.

23.07.2007 27430300-03_07_2007.EN 19
DLK-40x - 7. Gun Technology

♦ Adjusting the glue quantity

There are three ways to adjust the glue quantity.

1.Select the nozzle size

Ø 0.2mm -> less glue / smaller dots
.
.
.
Ø 1.0mm -> more glue / larger dots
2.Adjustment of glue pressure
Adjust the volume of the applied glue according to the specified
nozzle diameter in proportion to the pressure at the time of
application.
If the glue line is to remain constant at different machine speeds,
make sure that glue pressure is adjusted according to machine
speed. Increasing speed must lead to increasing pressure.
Install the (OPTIONAL) I/P-converter available from Baumer hhs
accessories.
Lower pressure -> less glue / smaller dots
Higher pressure -> more glue / larger dots

3.Adjust the armature stroke (Stroke adjustment))

Unscrew the stroke adjusting screw half a turn.
This is the optimal working position.
Now you can adjust the dot size.
- Turn to left -> less glue / smaller dots
- Turn to right -> more glue / larger dots
- If there is no satisfactory result available between both stops an
error is likely.
- Follow instructions described in chapter “Trouble shooting”.
Tighten the stroke adjusting screw without force. Otherwise nozzle
and armature may be damaged.

! Maintenance Application Guns

As a result of their design, cold glue units require very little maintenance and
should have a long service life under normal working conditions. Provided that
the glue to be processed is delivered to the guns in an absolutely clean, filtered
state. However, at least a minimum amount of time must be spent on looking
after the units whereby the particular amount of time required depends on the
particular operating conditions as well as the glue and the product to which the
glue is being applied.

Before carrying out repairs or replacing parts, always thoroughly clean the
working place and the device.
Rinse dirty components thoroughly with water, in particular when parts are to be
replaced.

ATTENTION !
Make utility service lines out of pressure !
