1. A rectangular box with mass 23.

7 kg initially at rest on a warehouse floor is

acted on by a net horizontal force of 180 N. a) what acceleration is
produced? b) How far does the crate travel in 8.0 s? c) What is its speed at
the end of 8.0 s?

2. A box of mass 20 kg is at rest on the floor. If set into motion, the friction force (resisting force) is
8 N opposite the direction of motion.
a) While at rest, what forces (magnitude and direction) are acting on the box?
b) What would be the acceleration if a horizontal force of 28 N is exerted on the box?
c) What horizontal force will give the box an acceleration of 2 m/s 2?

Solution:

a) The forces acting are

1. The weight downward which is equal to mg = 20 kg (9.8 m/s 2) = 196 N
2. The normal force upward. Since it is not moving the total force must be zero according to
Newton’s first law so the normal force is 196 N upward.
Note: No force to the right so no motion therefore no friction force.

b) F tot = ma ---- 28 N – 8 N = 20 kg a --- 20N = 20 kg a

A = 1 m/s2
c) F tot = ma - F – 8N = 20kg( 2 m/s2) - F =40N + 8 N
F = 48 N
