Share the GAPS tool with a Direct Report

Using the GAPS grid template, hold a meeting with your Direct Reports to ask them to
complete the GAPS grid template for a conversation in Week 5. Share with them the
purpose of completing the template document and ask them to send it to you in advance for
review.

Emphasise that during the conversation in Week 5, you will be spending time together
discussing the content and gaining agreement on next steps. Remember, this is not about box-
filling, but about having a conversation to identify strengths, development needs and specific
development goals to focus on.

Ask your direct report to use the questions below as guidance to help complete each of the
boxes, beginning with identifying the Goals and Values, move on to the Abilities required,
then others’ Perceptions and finally, the Standards and Success Factors to help them complete
the GAPS grid template.
