COACHING FOR SUPERVISORS: STAGE 1

SEED/BIC: In-Role Activity

STEP 1
Identify a Direct Report to whom you would like to give feedback. Write down on the template
overleaf, something they do well. Record a Behaviour, its Impact and the Consequences in
relation to something you have observed them doing recently.

STEP 2
Imagine how you would give feedback to this person. If you have not already shared with
your team that you plan to take more time to support their development and performance by
giving more regular feedback, then find an opportunity to do this before you launch into a
‘coachable moment’!

Notes for communicating to my Direct Reports about how I plan to give feedback:

EPCM Estimates, Template, Benchmarking

Identify a suitable and timely moment when you can actually give the feedback message. Prepare
how you will ‘set the stage’ and explain your view. Give the individual the feedback using the
SEED/BIC framework with the BIC example within it. Reflect on how you felt about doing this
and what, if anything, you would do differently next time. Perhaps, you could share your
reflections with a buddy coach.

Establish a routine for giving regular feedback (for example, at a specific time in every one-on-
one teleconference, client engagement or team meetings). The aim is to keep practicing and keep
improving.
SEED/BIC Template

STEP 1
B: Write the actual, observable, specific behaviour.
Gives attention to details - inputs to estimates.

I: Write the impact of that behaviour. What happened as a result of it?

Project engineers understand requirement and impact to their projects

C: Spell out the consequence, why it matters to the individual and organization, where
appropriate.
Ownership of cost estimate; reduced estimate cycle; meeting organisation
requirements.

STEP 2
Set the Stage: Write how you will introduce the feedback and link it to their development
goals.
I noticed you give attention to estimates front end work requirements (input check list) and
benchmarking of estimates with internal in-house data and that you would like to do
benchmarking using QBM in the future.

Explain your view: State where you observed the action/behaviour described in the BIC
above.

Recent completed project estimates (Minor projects, ETP cluster, Gate6...etc).

Explore the other person’s point of view: Write a few questions you could ask to check their
perception of their own behaviour/action and how it compares with yours.
How do you see the situation?
How might you do things differently next time?
What do you think worked, and what could have gone better?
Determine action steps and outcomes: Write a few questions you could ask to draw out
possible follow-up actions.
Now what are the next steps you will take, and how can I support your progress?
How you felt the conversation went and how I can be more helpful in the future.
