RA 9262 or Violence Against Women and Their Children Act

Evaluation:
The things that are good and works well on this act is that this law includes or covers all
types of abuses that can happen to women and their children. It even includes or defines different
types of situation that can take place in an abusive relationship. The penalties for breaking this
law are also strict and serious, so that will help in preventing more violence against women and
their children. But the problem still exists. There are still people getting abused or killed because
of their husbands or partner. According to Statista Research Department (2023), there have been
8,430 women who are victims of violence in 2021 alone, and this is just the reported cases.
Analysis:
There is a growing amount of violence against women nowadays. And to add to it, it is
most seen in places where people are vulnerable and where people, especially the women and
their children are supposed to be protected and not abused. I live in a city, in a fairly middle-class
neighborhood and I haven’t seen a lot of abuse and violence against women around me. But I
have seen it with my own eyes, how abuse is taking place, and it is usually unreported by the
victim or their friends and family. It is a shame that RA 9262 is not being utilized for its
supposed purpose of protecting women. There are a lot of possible reason I think, why this law
that suppose to protect women and their children, fails to do so sometimes. And some of the
reasons being lack of social personnel that would assist the victims, poor implementation of the
law, societal issues that hinders victim from reporting abuse, such as afraid of having no income
in the family, or family dismissing abuse as nothing but part of a relationship. I am disappointed
in our society and how we deal with abuses. Deaths and violences could have been avoided if we
just work together as a society and treat this issues seriously.
Conclusion:
Reading about the RA 9262 and articles of different cases of abuse in the Philippines
there is a huge contrast of the law and how the reality really is. Like the recent pandemic, it had a
lot of impact on women, reports of violence against women, children to PH Commission on
Women almost tripled during pandemic (CNN 2020). According to the Philippine National
Police, the number of reported rape cases for 2020 stood as high as 6548. It is safe to say that this
law that suppose to protect women and children, have failed to do so. Lack of social services and
infrastructure hinders people from getting help too. It is as if, they implemented that law just so
they will look good, but didn’t really plan of how to really stop it, in my opinion. The
governmental institutions dealing with this issues needs to have better funding, and there needs
to be more awareness about abuses and how to call for help, or how to deal with it as a spectator,
things like that will really help our society in dealing with these things. Because at the end of the
day, protecting our women and children, to have a decent future and life, will benefit all of us in
the end.
Action Plan:
So, after studying and scowering the internet and articles about the issues of Abuse
against women and children. It is clear that we need better social service for helping and
assisting victims of abuse. And also the social service people needs to have proper trainings or
knowledge about how to deal and find signs of abuse. There’s also a need to have a better
infrastructure for such services, the hotlines needs to be accessible all the time and the people
receiving the calls needs to be trained too. We as a society needs to be better about these things
too, we shouldn’t laugh or make people scared of sharing their history of abuse, we need to be
kinder and understanding to everyone because you might not know who is getting abuse or not.
At the end of the day, it is all of our responsibility to protect our mothers, daughters, sisters and
children.
