MICROPROJECT PROPOSAL

“FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION OF ROLLING

SHUTTER FOR THE INSTITUTE ENTRANCE.”

1.0. RATIONALE:
Micro-project is an activity intended to have an experience of doing complex work for the
students. A micro-project is the planned, designed and well-performed activity to
understand various theories involved in the syllabus. Micro-project leads to the
development of various skills and attitudes regarding studies. Basically, a micro-project aims
to practically experience and understand the contents of the particular course studied in the
academic semester. A micro project is the combined output of collection, analysis and final
data preparation. According to our course Manufacturing Processes, we have to prepare a
micro project that includes the use of various machining operation mentioned in the course
syllabus.

Rolling shutter door is commonly used for garages, go-downs, shops front show windows,
etc. as they are quite strong and offer proper safety to the property. The door shutter acts
as a curtain and therefore provides adequate protection and safety against fire and thefts.
This door is sufficiently strong and offer proper safety to glass and interiors when closed.
The rolling shutter door is made up of thin steel slabs called laths or slats about 1.25mm
thick interlocked to each other and coiled upon specially designed pipe shaft drum mounted
at the top. The roller shutter moves on two vertical steel guide channels installed at their
ends. A horizontal shaft and spring in the drum allow the roller shutter to be coiled in or out.
This door is capable of being rolled up at the top easily and causes no obstruction either in
the opening or in floor space. The cost of fabrication and fitting the structure varies
depending upon the thickness and finish of the material. The structure was finalized
according to our project guide and then finally rolling shutter was prepared.

2.0. LITERATURE REVIEW:

A literature review is a comprehensive summary of previous research on a topic. The

literature review surveys scholarly articles, books, and other sources relevant to a
particular area of research. A literature review is a piece of academic writing
demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the academic literature on a specific
topic. A literature review also includes a critical evaluation of the material; this is why it
is called a literature review rather than a literature report.
Something as simple as a door can be really difficult to choose when decorating a space
and it will have a big importance in the final result. So it is important to know what types
of door exist and how to choose between them

Wooden door : Wood doors used in residential construction come in three types: solid
wood, hollow core, and solid core. Each type of door is constructed differently and has
its own advantages and disadvantages.

Drawbacks
• Wooden doors can rot since they absorb water
• Wood doors require extra maintenance
• Quality timber and hardwood doors are expensive
• Wooden doors suffer from termite exposure

Collapsible Door : The Collapsible Door is one that could be opened and closed by a
slight pull or push having a channel type arrangement. When the size of the door is large
and hence to accommodate it in limited space a preferable door type is a collapsible
door.

Drawbacks
• It collects more dust in guide channel and hence becomes difficult to operate.
• If not operated properly, the hardware can get damaged, making the door very
difficult to use.
• There is a guide channel on the either side; therefore there are chances of someone
stumbling on the floor.
• It requires more lubrication. So it is not completely maintenance free.
• It needs regular painting as they get corroded earlier (If exposed to direct sunlight or
rain).
• The collapsible door does not provide privacy inside the room.
• These doors are not suitable for air-conditioned halls.

Sheet Metal Door : The Sheet Metal Door is the most common door found on bases due
to its resistances to melee weapons and fire but relatively cheap cost to craft.
Regardless, it is still relatively weak to explosives compared to its expensive indirect
upgrade, the ‘armored door’

Drawbacks
• Denting and Rusting
• High price
• Not cut to fit
Roller shutter door : Roller shutter doors are an excellent way of protecting the
property, from rain and wind. In addition, by having a shutter you are also protecting the
privacy and security. Roller shutters can be used for a whole realm of different
applications such as doors for garages, schools, prisons, vans, kitchens and warehouses.
In some countries the roller shutter can be subsidized by local governments as part of
security benefit schemes.

Drawbacks
• Requires Special Cleaning
• Operating Issues

Why we have chosen roller shutter door?

Door is first security of any property. Choosing the right type of protection involves
evaluating your space, considering the type of threats you may encounter and above all
else looking at your budget. Once you’ve considered all those elements, there may be
one security option you’ve overlooked but it’s not to be underestimated: door shutters.
Whether you chose indoor or outdoor rolling shutters this type of security choice is not
only effective but it also looks intimidating to potential criminals.

Security
Simply put, the biggest benefit of shutter doors is security. Locks or sensors on windows
and doors often are simply not enough to stop criminals from trying to break into your
college.

Discreet
While providing excellent security, shutter doors can do double duty by looking
inconspicuous. This is thanks in part to the way they’re built.

Affordable
Todays’ door shutters whether they’re made of aluminum or galvanized steel are quite
affordable. They’re strong and sturdy with a durable design that provides mechanical
strength.

Privacy
Collage require a degree of privacy, and there are not many doors that come close to
roller shutters in terms of preventing onlookers from seeing what’s going on inside.
Soundproofing can also be included to ensure noise does not spread outside of your
building

RATIONALE:-
Micro-project is an activity intended to have an experience of doing complex work for the
students. A micro-project is the planned, designed and well-performed activity to
understand various theories involved in the syllabus. Micro-project leads to the
development of various skills and attitude regarding studies. Basically, a micro-project aims

Rolling shutters are made of steel sheets & strips and are used as a flexible door panel in
shops, godowns, workshop sheds. As the rolling shutters are wound over an overhead
winding mandrill, the shutter will not give any problem for movement of people or vehicles
through the door. The shutters roll upwards parallel to front wall not occupying any space of
the floor and therefore, they are preferred for use in shops. Further, as these are made of
steel sheets, they are strong, long lasting and safe. There is good demand for rolling
shutters, as an item of common use in construction of shops, godowns, workshop sheds etc.
They are sold directly to the users. M.S. Strips of desired width are taken in coil form and fed
to roller type sheet forming machine in which the rolling shutter profiles are formed. The
spring steel wires are formed into springs shape in the spring coiling machine. The hand
shearing machine and the press brake are used to frame fabrication. All the components are
assembled and painted with red oxide primer. The product is to be fabricated and inspected
as per ISI specifications i.e. IS: 6248. Beside, IS specification; there are customer’s
specifications, which may be strictly followed too. We picked the best material so that the
structure should last longer and should not rust throughout its working life. The cost of
fabrication and fitting the structure varies depending upon the thickness and finishing of
materials. The shutter was completed according to our project guide and then finally the
project rolling shutter was prepared.

LITERATURE REVIEW:-
Considering the topic selected, an extensive literature survey was planned and carried out
to collect all the relevant information through various sources. Sources such as standard
textbooks, the internet, local vendors and suppliers of materials, local fabrication shops, etc.
are utilized for the purpose. We arranged the fabricator from our local area (Ratnagiri) and
we choose the fabricator which was affordable for full class. The information about rolling
shutter is gathered.

Roller Shutters are important for any premises and smooth working of a roller shutter is
necessary for the safety and security of any premises. There are some common problems
that can cause serious issues with Roller Shutters if they are not handled properly. Here are
some common problems: Failed Motor: A defective motor can cause serious problems with
roller shutters. If there is any unnecessary noise in the motor then it means there is
something wrong with the motor and that should be fixed on priority. A malfunctioned
motor can also get overheated and this can affect roller shutter working.

Power Sources and Connections: In an electric roller shutter, issues with power sources are
the most common problems one can face. So it's always better to check the power sources
and connections regularly. Loose connections can cause serious damage to the roller shutter
and sometimes it may cause for short circuit or any other faults.

Dust or Obstruction in the Track: Dust or obstruction in the roller shutter track is also a
common problem that can cause roller shutter failure. If a roller shutter is moving slowly or
has irregular movements, then it might be possible there is an obstruction or dust in the
track. One should clean it immediately for the smooth functioning of a roller shutter.

Proximity Sensors: These sensors control the opening and closing of the roller shutters. If
there is dirt on the sensor it will not work properly and can affect the opening or closing of
the shutter. Sometimes it can also damage the roller shutter. Proximity Sensors can also be
damaged due to any reason so one should check these sensors regularly.

Types and operation

1. Built-on roller shutter door

 Describes the type where the roller shutter box is fixed to the exterior of the building
facade.
2. Built-in roller shutter doors
 Where the roller shutter box is built into the lintel above the window.
3. Integrated roller shutter
 A roller shutter and window combined as a single unit.
4. Roller shutter with tilting louvres
 A roller shutter with laths that tilt, similar to an external venetian blind.
5. Manual
 With gear drive from the shutter roller traced through the building facade to a
universal joint on the room side that is operated by a cranked winding handle.
6. Manual tape
 A tape drive around a flange on the roller is traced through the building facade with
pulley guides to an inertia reel on the room side:
7. Spring Assist
 Spring assist roller shutters are operated by manually lowering or lifting the handle
which is mounted to the curtain end slat. Most cost effective solutions for securing
small spaces.
8. Motorized / Electric

OUTPUT OF THE MICRO PROJECT (SKILLS DEVELOPED)
A micro project activity was performed as a part academic requirement of the concerned
subject. The intention of carrying out such an activity is to have practical experience of using
the processes, tools, and equipment learned through the syllabus. It helps to strengthen the
learning obtained through theory classes. Getting practical knowledge and experience is the
basic requirement of any micro project and as mechanical engineers, we need to
understand the different concepts related to industries. By undertaking the decided micro-
project, we learned the following aspects:

1. How to approach and deal with supplies and vendors of the materials for purchasing
the raw materials.
2. Different activities performed at the fabrication units that provide service of similar
items.
3. Different welding processes that are employed for welding stainless steel materials.
4. Safety precautions to be taken during the fabrication work.
5. Planning and execution of the planned project work.
6. Effective use of available resources and decision-making.
7. Group formation and working in groups through proper coordination.
8. IT skills such as the use of MS word and PowerPoint tools.
9. Preparation of CAD drawings for the planned and final structure.
10. Leadership and individual presentation skills.

APPLICATIONS OF THE MICROPROJECT:

Roller shutters have many applications including doors for vans, garages, kitchens, schools,
prisons and warehouses. They are also commonly used as window blinds in some European
countries, such as Germany and Spain.

In some parts of the world, roller shutters are subsidized by local governments. In areas that
are frequently exposed to inclement weather, roller shutters are used as a method of
insulation, can protect windows against hail damage, and can be made to withstand high
wind.

In some municipalities, building owners may have to request a permit or are disallowed
from having certain types of roller shutters on the exterior of their building
