Metabolism is the set of chemical and biological processes that occur in the body to

maintain life. Essentially, it is our body's way of converting the food we eat into
energy and nutrients to support bodily functions such as respiration, growth, and
tissue repair.

Metabolism is divided into two main categories: catabolism and anabolism.

Catabolism refers to the process by which large molecules are broken down into
smaller molecules, releasing energy in the process. Anabolism, on the other hand, is
the process of building larger molecules from smaller molecules, using the energy
released in catabolism.

Metabolism is controlled by the endocrine system, which secretes hormones that

regulate metabolic processes in the body. Hormones, such as insulin and glucagon,
regulate the level of glucose in the blood and help control appetite and the
metabolism of fats and proteins.

A person's metabolic rate refers to the amount of energy their body consumes at rest.
This rate can vary based on factors such as age, gender, genetics, level of physical
activity, and amount of muscle mass.

Metabolism is essential to life and health, and can influence our weight, energy, and
general health. A balanced diet, regular exercise and good quality sleep are important
factors in maintaining a healthy metabolism.
