TOPIC: The Music of Pakistan, Israel and Arabia
WHAT YOU ARE EXPECTED TO LEARN
OBJECTIVE: at the end of the lesson students are expected to:
Analyze musical elements of selected songs and instrumental pieces heard and performed;

Central Asian music encompasses numerous different musical styles originating from a large number of sources. Though
Pakistan is part of South Asia, its western part is considered as an extension of Central Asia. Pakistan is known for its
unique vocals. The distinctive Pakistani sound was formed with multiple influences not only from various parts of South
Asia but it also includes diverse elements from Central Asia, Persia, Turkey, and the Arab world.

VOCAL MUSIC OF PAKISTAN


Pakistan is known for its two vocal styles in singing:
1. Ghazal
 traditional expressions of love, separation, and loneliness; It tells about both the pain of loss of the lover
and the beauty of love in spite of that pain.
 its structural requirements are more strict than those of most poetic forms traditionally written in English
 is considered by many to be one of the principal poetic forms in the Persian civilization
 can be sung by both men and women
2. Qawwali
 the devotional music of the Chishti Order
 a vibrant musical tradition that stretches back more than 700 years
 originally performed mainly at Sufi shrines throughout the subcontinent and gained mainstream popularity

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Punjabi music strengthens the importance of musical instruments in Pakistan. Punjab is a region
in South Asia which is divided into West Punjab, Pakistan and East Punjab, India. Bhangra, one of the most recognized
forms of Punjab, is based on the drum rhythm of dhol.

WEST ASIA - ISRAEL

In general, the music of West Asia is modal. Harmony is not emphasized but rather includes salient features such as
melodic complexity and ornamentation, including ¼ tones and rigorous rhythmic development. West Asian music is
commonly used during:

 Communal worship (in Mosque, Synagogue and Church)  Mystic rituals (Sufis, Hassidic)  Life passage events
(Weddings, Bar Mitzvas, Bat Mitzvas, Anniversaries)  Entertainment (Belly Dancing, Folk Dancing)

A. Israeli Music

Israeli singers have a distinctive vocal style. They sing with guttural and throaty enunciation.
Two Divisions of Jewish Music
1. Devotional
almost entirely vocal
 featured during Sabbath and other holy days
 the art of Hazan (leader of prayer in synagogue) has always been evident in the culture
 shofar is a special call to prayer and repentance; it is sounded on the High Holidays (the Jewish New Year and
Day of Atonement)
2. Secular
 instruments and voice are used

Wazn
 literally means “measure”
 performed on the goblet drum, frame drum, and kettle drum
 only used in musical genres with a fixed rhythmic-temporal organization including recurring measures, motifs, and

 the rhythmic pattern in Arabian music
 reputed to be over 100 iqa, but many of them have fallen out of fashion and are rarely used in performance
 the greatest varieties of iqa (or iqa’at as pronounced) range from two to 48 beats
 are used in the muwashahat (an Andalusian musical form) where every syllable of the lyric must fall on a beat
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF ISRAEL The lute which is similar to the Philippine bandurria and the laud, traces its origins to
the Middle Eastern Oud and Indian sitar. Goblet drum, darbuk, the tambourine and other instruments associated with
Middle Eastern music are used as accompaniment. One of the dances where accompaniment is used is Hora, a dance
that often has strong off beats and asymmetric meters.

The Middle East is rich in cultural heritage, and this is clearly evident in the 14 variety and quality of regional arts and
crafts.

Typical artistic forms from the region include:

of the most acclaimed art forms contributed by the Middle East, the Middle Eastern
aesthetic can be seen in almost any product from the region even including such things
as handmade soap from Syria or Lebanon.

PAKISTAN

Pakistani architecture is divided into four recognized periods:

Pre-Islamic
Islamic,
Colonial
Post-Colonial
Around the middle of the 3rd millennium BCE, an advanced urban culture developed for the first time in the region, with
large buildings, some of which still survive to this day like Mohenjo Daro, Harappa and Kot Diji which are among the pre-
Islamic settlements that are now tourist attractions.
Across Pakistan, brightly colored flamboyant trucks painted with images of idealized landscapes, famous personalities,
flowers and trees turned village lanes, city streets and long-distance highways into a national gallery without walls, a
free-form, kaleidoscopic exhibition in perpetual motion.

WHAT’S IN
In this part of the module, the learners’ are provided with structured learning experiences that will assess their prior
knowledge, and understanding, of the game, scrabble.

Originally called Criss Cross, the game, which was


based on the crossword puzzle and anagrams, was
developed by Alfred M. Butts, an architect, in 1931. It
was redesigned, renamed as Scrabble, and marketed
by James Brunot in 1948. It was first sold in Great
Britain in 1954.
Scrabble is a word game in which two to four players
score points by placing tiles, each bearing a single letter,
onto a game board divided into a 15×15 grid of squares.
The tiles must form words that, in crossword fashion, read
left to right in rows or downward in columns, and be
included in a standard dictionary or lexicon.

In an English-language set, the game contains 100 tiles, 98 of which are marked with a letter and a point value
ranging from 1 to 10. The number of points for each lettered tile is based on the letter's frequency in standard
English, commonly used letters such as vowels are worth one point, while less common letters score higher, with Q
and Z each worth 10 points. The game also has two blank tiles that are unmarked and carry no point value. The
blank tiles can be used as substitutes for any letter; once laid on the board, however, the choice is fixed. Other
language sets use different letter set distributions with different point values.
Tiles are usually made of wood or plastic and are 19 by 19 millimetres (0.75 in × 0.75 in) square and 4 mm (0.16 in)
thick, making them slightly smaller than the squares on the board. Only the rosewood tiles of the deluxe edition vary
in width up to 2 mm (0.08 in) for different letters. Travelling versions of the game often have smaller tiles (e.g.
13 mm × 13 mm (0.51 in × 0.51 in)), sometimes they are magnetic to keep them in place. The capital letter is printed
in black at the centre of the tile face and the letter's point value printed in a smaller font at the bottom right corner.
Most modern replacement tile sets come at 18 mm × 20 mm (0.7 in × 0.8 in).

WHAT’S IN
Mental illness, also called mental health disorders, refers to a wide range of mental health conditions
disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression,
anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors.

Causes of Mental Disorder


 Environmental Stress
We cannot entirely avoid stress in our lives. We are exposed to many pressures and demands of our
environment. These produce a state of physical and mental tension which is called “stress” too much stress can lead to
mental disorder
 Family
Family is a major force affecting mental health. The home may be a source of mental satisfaction or source of
stress. Growing up in an atmosphere of tension, frustration, constant criticism can affect in mental health.
 Heredity
Although study show that schizophrenia and depression occur more often in certain families, this does not
prove that the disorder is inherited.
 Physical Factors
Some chemicals in the brain may play a role in the development of some mental disorders. Since the brain is the
body’s master control unit as a control unit, it controls behavior, thoughts, and emotions.

Psychological disorders, also referred to as mental disorders, are abnormalities of the mind that result in persistent behavior
patterns that can seriously affect your day-to-day function and life. Many different psychological disorders have been identified and
classified, including eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa; mood disorders, such as depression; personality disorders, such as
antisocial personality disorder; psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia; sexual disorders, such as sexual dysfunction; and others.

Classification of Menta Disorders


A. Neurosia - Neurosis refers to a class of functional mental disorder involving distress but not delusions or hallucinations,
where behavior is not outside socially acceptable norms. It is also known as psychoneurosis or neurotic disorder. 
B. Psychosis - Psychosis is a condition that affects the way your brain processes information. It causes you
to lose touch with reality. You might see, hear, or believe things that aren't real. Psychosis is a
symptom, not an illness. A mental or physical illness, substance abuse, or extreme stress or trauma
can cause it.

Examples of Mental Disorders

A. Anxiety Disorder –
The term "anxiety disorder" refers to specific psychiatric disorders that involve extreme fear or worry,
and includes generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder and panic attacks, agoraphobia,
social anxiety disorder, selective mutism, separation anxiety, and specific phobias.
B. Somatoform Disorder –
A somatic symptom disorder, formerly known as a somatoform disorder, is any mental disorder that
manifests as physical symptoms that suggest illness or injury, but cannot be explained fully by a
general medical condition or by the direct effect of a substance, and are not attributable to another
mental disorder
C. Schizophrenia –
D. Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality
abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely
disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling
E. Mood Disorder –
A mood disorder is a mental health problem that primarily affects a person's emotional state. It is a
disorder in which a person experiences long periods of extreme happiness, extreme sadness, or both.
It is normal for someone's mood to change, depending on the situation.
F. Depression
