BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Welcome to your first module for the first quarter! Last year, you have
learned different old and new technologies in presenting art. This time, you
will attempt to analyze various art forms from around the world. For this
quarter, we will learn about how the culture and civilization of Asia influenced
the world in their arts.

The Characteristics of Asian Art

Asian art already surfaced the world many centuries ago. Chinese,
Japanese, Indian, and Arabic cultures mainly influenced other countries in
their art forms. Mostly, Asian art is known in the following characteristics:
bronze statues, ceramic art, textiles, landscape paintings, ink-and-wash
painting, garden design, shrines, pagodas, shadow puppets, and calligraphy.

Influence of Asian Art to Filipino Artists

Filipinos had been connecting to other Asian countries even before
colonizers set foot on our islands. They already exchanging products with
Chinese and this might be the start of the influence of Asian art to our local
arts back then until now. Here are some images of Filipino artworks that
show similar characteristics with Asian arts.

ANCIENT CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY

Since the Philippines is also an Asian country, the difference with other
Asian arts is unrecognizable. The landscapes of our islands that are depicted
by Filipino artists in their painting have resemblance to the Japanese and
Chinese landscape paintings. The designs in our textiles, wood carvings, and
pottery are inspired from the surroundings such as flowers, leaves, trees, sun,
and moon which are also present in other Asian arts because of the countries’
agricultural environment. Chinese bronze sculptures were dated many
centuries ago while ancient Filipinos only use wood for sculptures. So, maybe
the idea of using bronze or other metals as medium was influenced by the
Chinese when their products entered our market through barter trading.

6
Influence of Asian Art to International Artists
In 1850s the Japanese were compelled to be opened for international
trade. As a result, they sent representatives to the west and offered porcelains,
bronzes, and other artworks to be included as displays in international fairs.
Because of the exposure of Japanese art, this served as a fresh inspiration to
western artists because its style is very unique and different from their style.
