LEARNING CONTENT

INFORMATION SHEET 1.1

Types and Uses of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Employers have duties concerning the provision and use of personal protective
equipment (PPE) at work. PPE is an equipment that will protect the user against
health or safety risks at work. It can include items such as safety helmets, gloves, eye
protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses

The Importance of Personal Protective Equipment.

The purpose is to reduce employee exposure to hazards when engineering and

administrative controls are not feasible or effective to reduce these risks to acceptable
levels

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other

garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer's body from injury or infection. The
hazards addressed by protective equipment include physical, electrical, heat, chemicals,
biohazards, and airborne particulate matter.

It is important that students and workers are made aware that protection against
accidents primarily lies on identifying possible hazard and taking the necessary safety
measure against such hazard.

When necessary, workers should be provided with protective clothing and other
personal protective equipment.

Types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Eye and Face Protection

Eye protection is protective gear for the eyes, and sometimes face, designed to
reduce the risk of injury. Examples of risks requiring eye protection can include: impact
from particles or debris, light or radiation, wind blast, heat, sea spray or impact from some
type of ball or puck used in sports.

4
OSHA requires employers to ensure the safety of all employees in the work
environment. Eye and face protection must be provided whenever necessary to protect
against chemical, environmental, radiological or mechanical irritants and hazards.

The IOSH Blood borne Pathogens Standard defines potential contamination as

including generation of splashes, spray, splatter or droplets of blood or other potentially
infectious materials called OPIM. Eye and face protection must be worn when potential
exists for contamination of mucous membranes

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) aims to make an easier and
safer process in setting the standard for eye protection, ANSI Z87. 1-2015, establishes
the criteria for using, testing, marking, choosing, and maintaining eye protection to
prevent or minimize injuries

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH),
safety goggles offer the best eye protection from splashes, splatter, and spray of blood,
other body fluids, or chemicals.

The lenses and frames are much stronger than regular eyeglasses. Safety
glasses must meet standards of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Look

5
for the Z87 mark on the lens or frame. Safety glasses provide eye protection for general
working conditions where there may be dust, chips or flying particles

Face shields are intended to protect the entire face or portions of it from impact
hazards such as flying fragments, objects, large chips, and particles. When worn alone,
face shields do not protect employees from impact hazards.

However, you should always wear safety glasses under your face shield because
the bottom and sides of face shields typically have gaps. Liquid or debris passing through
these gaps can contact your eyes, potentially causing an injury
The main face shield is made of clear plastic sheets. The material that works the best is
PETG, but if that's not available–any clear plastic of the correct thickness will provide
basic functionality. Thickness: Between 0.010″ to 0.030″ is ideal.

FACE SHIELD FACE SHIELD SAFETY MASK BIONIC FACE SHIELD

6
A welding helmet is a type of headgear used when performing certain types of
welding to protect the eyes, face and neck from flash burn, ultraviolet light, sparks,
infrared light, and heat.
It's recommended that you use between a shade 10 to a shade 13 welding lens to
prevent flash burn on your eyes. The higher the number the darker the shade will be.
However, the more amperage you are using the darker the shade you will want to have
to avoid burning your eyes.

7
HEAD PROTECTION

Head protection is an item of personal protective equipment (PPE), which is

generally designed to protect the scalp area and sometimes the jaw as well. The face is
generally not covered by head protection and eye protection. Head protection is any
equipment that protects these areas from impact trauma and burns.

They are used in mining, construction, shipbuilding, tunneling, lumbering, and

manufacturing. Class B utility service hats and caps protect the wearer's head from
impact and penetration by falling or flying objects and from high-voltage shock and burn.
They are used extensively by electrical workers

Class C Hard Hats are not tested for electrical resistance. They are designed for
lightweight comfort and impact protection and are not intended to provide protection
from electrical conductors.

Employees working in areas where there is a possible danger of head injury from
impact, or from falling or flying objects, or from electrical shock and burns, shall be
protected by protective helmets

IMPORTANCE OF HARD HATS

Hard hats are a type of helmets worn in workplaces to protect the head from
flying objects, collision impact, debris, and shock among other hazards. Most injuries
are directly caused by a worker not wearing a hard hat. Hard hats are designed to
protect against concussions, cuts and bruises and traumatic brain injuries caused by
strikes to the head from falling objects, impacts from swinging cables and, sometimes,
from burns and electrical shocks."

HARD – HAT COLORS AND IDENTIFICATION

8
FOOT PROTECTION

Foot protection is any piece of personal protective equipment protecting one's

foot from any injury while at work or during movement. The foot is a vital part of our body
and since we are on our feet constantly from day to day, they are more susceptible to
injury.

Safety shoes with impact protection are required in work areas where heavy objects or
tool could be dropped on the feet. Safety shoes with puncture protection are required
whe working around nails, wires, tacks scrap metal and other objects that could be pierce
the feet.

Types of Foot Protection

GUARDS: Metatarsal guards can be strapped to the outside of your shoes, and they
protect your instep area from getting crushed by heavy objects.
TOE GUARDS: Toe guards fit over the ends of regular shoes to help prevent foot injuries

IMPORTANCE OF FOOT PROTECTION

Protective, safety footwear is essential to ensure safe and healthy feet. Steel toe boots
and shoes protect your feet, help prevent injuries to them, and reduce the severity of
injuries that may occur in the workplace.

Chemical-resistant boots may be required to provide protection from caustic, reactive,

toxic, or corrosive materials during cleaning, or surface preparation. Slip-resistant soled
shoes should be worn when working on slippery surfaces

Examples of workplace foot injuries

Injuries Common Causes

-Punctures of the sole of the foot -Loose nails, sharp metal or glass objects

-Cuts or severed feet or toes, -Chain saws, rotary mowers, unguarded

lacerations machinery

9
Diiferent Kinds of Foot Protection

HAND PROTECTION

Hand protection is saving one's hands from any sort of injury at work. Very
often, hands are exposed to hazardous conditions such as sharp edges, pinch points,
rotary machinery, hot objects, electricity, splinters and chemicals.

Hand and Arm Protection. Potential hazards to hands and arms include skin absorption
of harmful substances, chemical or thermal burns, electrical dangers, bruises,
abrasions, cuts, punctures, fractures or amputations. Protective equipment includes
gloves, finger guards and arm coverings

Gloves protect and comfort hands against cold or heat, damage by friction, abrasion or
chemicals, and disease; or in turn to provide a guard for what a bare hand should not
touch

TYPES OF GLOVES
 Cotton/Fabric Gloves. This is the most common type of gloves for general work or
projects where a high level of protection isn't needed.
 Coated Fabric Gloves.
 Leather Gloves.
 Latex, Rubber or Plastic Gloves.
 Kevlar Gloves.
 Butyl Rubber Gloves.
 Vibration-Resistant/Impact-Resistant Gloves.
 Puncture-Resistant Gloves

10
REMINDER
Do not wear gloves, rings, watches, bracelets or any accessories while working.
When working around rotating equipment, wearing gloves can actually increase the
chance of the operator being pulled into the machine, resulting in limb amputation or
death. Loose clothing, jewelry and gloves can get tangled in a rotating equipment.

HEARING PROTECTION

Hearing protectors are required to prevent noise induced hearing loss.

Hearing protection devices reduce the noise energy reaching and causing damage to
the inner ear. Ear muffs and earplugs are the most common types of PPE.

Ear protection refers to devices used to protect the ear, either externally
from elements such as cold, intrusion by water and other environmental conditions,
debris, or specifically from noise. High levels of exposure to noise may result in noise-
induced hearing loss.

EARPLUGS OR EARMUFFS

Because they fit directly into the ear canal, ear plugs offer greater protection than ear
muffs. Ear muffs are more difficult to carry and protect, making them more cumbersome
for workers. If you need to wear other types of PPE, then ear plugs are probably the
best choice.

There are three basic types of hearing protection devices:

 ear muffs.
 ear plugs.
 canal caps

Earmuffs are objects designed to cover a person's ears for hearing

protection or for warmth. They consist of a thermoplastic or metal
head-band, that fits over the top or back of the head, and a cushion or
cup at each end, to cover the external ear. Earmuffs come in many
models designed to fit most people. They block out noise by
completely covering the outer ear. Some earmuffs also include
electronic parts to help users communicate or to block sound impulses
or background noise. People should wear a hearing protector if the
noise or sound level at the workplace exceeds 85 decibels (A-
weighted) or dBA. Hearing protectors reduce the noise exposure level
and the risk of hearing loss.

11
EAR-PLUG is a device that is inserted into an individual's ear canal to protect them
from exposure to loud noises. The main advantage of ear plugs is the level of protection
they provide. Because they fit directly into the ear canal, ear plugs offer greater
protection than ear muffs.

CANAL CAPS often resemble earplugs on a flexible plastic or metal band. The earplug tips of
a canal cap may be a formable or pre-molded material. The main advantage canal caps offer
is convenience. When it's quiet, employees can leave the band hanging around their necks.
They can quickly insert the plug tips when hazardous noise starts again.

Respiratory Protection

Dust mask and respirators are used for respiratory protection. Depending upon the level
of hazard present in the environment the kind of mask is determined. A large variety of
respirators are available and they give different levels of protection to the wearer. There
are either disposable or reusable face masks.

N95 Respirators without Exhalation Valve

These general purpose disposable N95 respirators are used where there
is high risk of exposure to airborne particles, including woodworking,
demolition, and food manufacturing. N95 respirators filter at least 95% of
airborne particles. They are not oil-resistant

N95 Respirators with Exhalation Valve

These general purpose disposable N95 respirators have an exhalation

valve and are used where there is high risk of exposure to airborne
particles, including woodworking, demolition, and food manufacturing.
N95 respirators filter at least 95% of airborne particles. They are not oil-
resistant. The exhalation valve opens automatically when the wearer
breaths out to allow breath to exit the mask quickly, keeping the wearer
cooler and more comfortable. The valve automatically closes when the
wearer inhales to ensure all air breathed in is filtered.
R95 Respirators with Nuisance Odor Removal without Exhalation Valve

12
These general purpose disposable N95 respirators filter nuisance odors and are
used where there is high risk of exposure to airborne particles, including
woodworking, demolition, and food manufacturing. N95 respirators filter at least
95% of airborne particles. They are not oil-resistant. These respirators reduce or
eliminate nuisance odors, such as organic vapors and acid gas, that are found in
demotion work and food manufacturing.

RESPIRATOR is an apparatus worn over the mouth and nose or the entire face to
prevent the inhalation of dust, smoke, or other noxious substances. A respirator is used
to protect a person who is working in an area with chemicals or toxic fumes.

The many types of respirators available include

1. particulate respirators, which filter out airborne particles;
2. “gas masks,” which filter out chemicals and gases;
3. airline respirators, which use compressed air from a remote source; and
4. self-contained breathing apparatus, which include their own air supply

THE SAFETY HARNESS

A safety harness is a system of restraints that prevent the wearer from falling from
a height. By wearing the belt or harness the risk of injury from a fall is greatly reduced.
The harness allows the user to attach themselves to a stationary object, therefore
ensuring they will not hit the ground in the event of a fall. Falling from a height is one of
the most common causes of personal injury in the workplace, so it is very important to
make sure you are properly equipped when working up high.

13
SAFETY NETS.

Safety nets are designed to progressively deflect (stretch) and absorb the
energy of a fall, so a falling person is less likely to be injured. The greater the fall height,
the greater the impact; so the net’s deflection must also be greater. The safety net must
be able to deform or deflect enough to absorb all of the energy from the fall’s impact up
to the maximum fall height for the design.

Safety nets also help protect from falling debris the people, vehicles and
other structure below or near the construction.

When using a safety net system: Install all safety nets at the distance
beneath the falling hazard as required for your jurisdiction. For example, Workers
Compensation Board of PEI requires personnel safety nets to be installed within 4.6 m
(15 feet) below the work area.

Safety nets shall be provided when workplaces are more than 25 feet above the
ground or water surface, or other surfaces where the use of ladders, scaffolds, catch
platforms, temporary floors, safety lines, or safety belts is impractical.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

DIRECTION: Choose the proper PPE in the box that is needed to protect you in the
following hazards.

Hand protection Safety shoes Goggles Hard hats Respirator

Gloves Ear muffs Catch harness Eye and face protection
1. Falling object 6. Radiation
2. Objects that could puncture the skin 7. Toxic chemicals
3. Objects that could roll over the workers feet. 8. Excessive noise
4. Heat 9. Fall from heights
5. Harmful dust 10. Chemical absorption or
