Module 3: PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Activity # 1
1. When must I provide PPE?
 There are hazardous workplaces where PPE is required, except where and to the
extent that such risk has been adequately controlled by other means that are equally
or more effective. In an unsafe workplace, the employer must ensure the safety of his
or her employees. If the employer is aware that his or her employee may be exposed to
a risk to their health or safety while at work. It is the employer's or company's
responsibility to provide PPE for employees' safety.
2. If employees wear eyeglasses with prescription lenses, may I consider these as eye
protection?
 Prescription glasses cannot be used as protective eyewear unless they are specially
designed to be so. Prescription glasses and safety glasses serve different functions and
serve different purposes, and they are not created equal. Safety glasses are intended to
protect your eyes on the job or at home. Unlike prescription glasses, safety glasses are
typically made of a different material or have a different thickness to withstand impact
from flying objects or hazardous materials. Prescription lenses in everyday eyeglasses
are primarily designed to correct vision and offer little to no protection from
hazardous materials such as gases or sharp objects.
3. Could employees wearing hard hats and working at elevations create a potential hazard
for the employees working below?
 Yes, it can create a potential hazard for the employees working below. Protective
helmets worn by employees working at higher elevations must have chin straps in
order to protect employees working below.
4. Is there one kind of glove that will protect against all workplace hazards?
 There is no one type of glove that will protect employees' hands from all hazards
because protective gloves are built or designed based on the workplace hazard, and
we have different workplace hazards, so there is no such thing as one glove that will
protect against all workplace hazards.
5. Why should workers be outfitted with the more expensive industrial respirators when
look alike “nuisance masks” are available?
 Toxic dusts and mists commonly found in industrial and manufacturing settings, such
as welding, grinding, sanding, and maintenance or repair applications, are filtered by
respirators. Respirators meet minimum performance standards and are certified by
government-approved agencies. A “nuisance dust mask,” on the other hand, lacks
government approval and meets no government performance standards. Nuisance
dust masks should not be worn when there is a risk of exposure to hazardous
conditions. The filtration efficiency of a nuisance dust mask is lower, and the face seal
around the nose and mouth is less effective than that of a certified respirator.

6. Is cotton sufficient as earplugs?

 No, it isn't enough. Cotton cannot block out high frequency sound and provides no
protection from loud noises.

7. Once I have selected the specific PPE for my workers, how do I make sure they use it
properly?

 You must encourage your employees by explaining the importance of wearing PPE and
showing and training them on how to wear and use the PPE required for their job.
Also, you must be certain that you will wear PPE if you are in the workplace so that
your employees will take PPE seriously only if you do.

8. How often should hard hats be inspected?

 Inspections of hard hats should be performed every 4-6 months, even if there has been
no event or obvious reason for it to stop working. Even if no incident has occurred that
could have caused the hat to be damaged, it can still wear out over time. After
repeated use, the hat's suspension may become loose or weak. It can become
dangerous much faster in extremely hot or cold environments.

9. What is the proper way to dispose of PPE?

 PPE that has been thoroughly cleaned can be discarded as regular garbage. PPE
contaminated with pesticides must be disposed of in accordance with the pesticide
product label and all federal, state, and local regulations.

10. What PPE is used for working over dangerous equipment and machinery?

 A safety harness is a type of personal protection equipment used to keep someone

from falling into a machine or other hazard. This should be a three-point harness that
is securely fastened to a strong base.
