Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

What is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?

According to The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) PPE


refers to the specialized clothing or equipment wore by an employee for
protection against infectious materials. They are designed to protect different parts
of the body such as: eyes, head, hands, feet and ears etc…

 Eyes and Face protection
 Foot protection
 Hand Protection
 Head Protection
 Body Protection
 Ear Protection

Eyes and Face Protection


 Safety Glasses or Face shields
These prevent foreign objects from entering the eyes that is during
welding, cutting, grinding, and nailing.
Foot Protection
 Hard toe shoes that are non-slip
These are worn to protect the toes from being crushed when working
around heavy equipment or from falling objects.
Hand Protection
 Hard Hats
These protect the head of workers in case of falling objects.
Body Protection
 Coverall or Overall
These are typically worn over ordinary clothes to help protect the skin
from coming into contact with dust, paint, grease etc…

Ear Protection
 Ear muffs
This device fits against the head and encloses the external ear which can
reduce sound levels or decibels of 15-30.

PPE and Safety Practices Found and Used Around
The School, Work and Industry

Different PPE and safety practices are used in the work and school industry as a
way to protect workers and students. Some safety rules used in the school
environment are:
 Do not run in the hall or on stairways
 Do not use equipment without authorisation
 Know all emergency exits
 Refrain from horse-playing in the classroom

Some PPE used in the various working environments and industries include
 Stationery Engineer – Splash goggles, Face shield, Hard Hat and Respirator
 Painters- Safety glasses
 Nurse-Masks, Gloves, Eye protection, Gowns, Shoe covers
