Introduction
Welcome! In this manual we will explore what Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE) are and their importance in
the workplace. Not only that, but we will also discover
different types of PPE and their correct uses. So, be
informed and keep safe!!
What is a PPE?
PPE or Personal Protective Equipment is protective
gear including: clothing, helmets, goggles and gloves.
These equipment are designed to protect the user's body
from injury or hazards. The hazards that Personal
Protective Equipment can protect its users from are
physical, electrical, heat, chemicals, biohazards and
airborne particulate matter. PPE are very important to
workers as a research done by OSHA showed that PPE
can prevent 37.6% of accidents.
Types of PPE
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) has many
different aspects or parts to it. The main parts of what
make up a PPE are as follows:
1. Eye Protection
2. Ears/Hearing Protection
3. Hand Protection
4. Foot Protection
5. Head Protection
6. Respiratory Protection
7. Body Protection
Eye Protection= Eye protection in PPE is a barrier that provides
protection from infectious materials entering the eye. It also protects
the user from flying debris and is often used with other personal
protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, gowns, masks or
respirators.

Ears/Hearing Protection=Ears/ Hearing PPE are used to

prevent noise induced hearing loss, and unwanted debris from
entering the ear. Ears/Hearing PPE reduce the noise that enters the
ear.
Hand Protection= Hand PPE is made to protect the user against
a wide range of hazards such as cuts, extreme temperatures, skin
irritation and contact with toxic or corrosive substances.

Foot Protection= Foot PPE protects the user's feet from various
accidents. Some things Foot PPE protect against are; falling objects,
cuts, burns and foot fractures.
Head Protection= Head Personal Protective Equipment protects
the workers head from falling objects, brain injury, electric shock and
rain. Head PPE also protect the nose, hair, neck and sometimes the
ear.

Respiratory PPE= Respiratory PPE is worn when the worker is

working in an environment where they may be exposed to hazardous
substances in the air. Additionally, they also protect against saw dust
and smaller debris.
Body PPE= This type of Personal Protective Equipment may be
argued to be the most important. The reason for the body PPE being
maybe the most important PPE is that it protects vital organs,
abdomen and torso. It protects users from physical, biological and
chemical harm.
Correct Use of PPE
Each class of PPE has a different function, but they all serve a
purpose; to protect the user from harm. To ensure proper use
of Personal Protective Equipment, they should always be
replaced when worn out and be maintained.
Closing Remarks
Correct information is power! The importance of PPE in a
workshop is paramount to a safe environment. It is also
important to remember that the type of PPE may change
depending on the task given. Always keep in mind that you
should care for your PPE and replace them if damaged or
worn out.

So, remember to practice safety measures, so everyone can

remain safe!
