Comparison

1. Definition
Is a structure that compare 2 or more individuals or object in a speific way. There are 3
types of comparisons: equals, comparative and superlative.
- Equals comparion
2. Equal comparison
is a comparison between things and events at an equal level. Equal comparison is when
we compare equal things, equal things.
a) As….as:
Form: S + V + (not) as + (adj/adv) + as
Ex: - i’m as good in physics as in english
- Her car runs as fast as a race car
Tips: in some cases, we can use “so” instead of “as”.
Notes:
b) Less … than = not as/ so … as (kém … hơn)
e.g: this film is less / not as interesting than / as the one we saw last week
c) twice/ three … times as … as ( hơn… gấp hai/ gấp ba lần …)
e.g: their house is about three times as big as ours
d) the same … as/ like ( bằng…/ giống như)
e.g: Ann’s salary is the same as jane’s
e.g: her hair is dark brown like mine
3. Comparative
Use: to compare things or people that are diffterrent
Form: S + V + adj/adv + er + than + … (short adj/adv)
Ex: the crime rate in this area is higher than in other parts of the country
Form: S + V + more + adj/adv + than + … (long adj/adv)
Ex: lock your door more carefully next time or maybe you won’t get burgled.
Syllables Form Example
1 or 2 end with-y, -le, - Adj/adv -er - Short => shorter
er, -ure, -ow, -et - Big => bigger
Hungry =>

- Noisy => noisier
2+ More + adj/adv - Modern => more
modern
- Expensvive =>
more expensive
-if you want to say how big the different is, you have to use other words
Ex: Paul is a touch/ a bit/ a little/ quite a bit/ a lot/ far/ much/ a good deal/ a great
deal better than i’m at physics
4. Supperlative
use: to compare actions of one member of a group of people or things with the whole group.
Form: S + V + the + adj-est + N
Ex: only the criminal who ran fastest managed to escape from the police
Form: S + V + the most + adj/adv + N
Ex: This is the most pretiest dish i’ve had for a long time
Syllables Form Example
1 or 2 end with -y, -le, -er, - The + adj/adv + est - the smallest

5. double comparatives
use: use to describe a cause-effect process
form: the + comparative + (N) + S + (V), the + comparatives + (N) + S + (V)
Ex: the more time we study, the better grades we can get
6. repeated comparative
use: use to describe a continuous change
form: comparative + and + comparative
ex: the weather is getting hotter and hotter
