Dear student, discuss on the following questions.


1. How did swimming started?

Swimming emerged as a competitive recreational activity in the 1830s in England. In 1828, the


first indoor swimming pool, St George's Baths was opened to the public. By 1837, the
National Swimming Society was holding regular swimming competitions in six
artificial swimming pools, built around London.

2. What is the importance of knowing the history of swimming?

The importance of knowing the history of swimming is to have knowledge where and when
Swimming started and to give credits in the evidence of how our ancestors learned their skills
that helped us in our lives today.

In this unit, I have learned that Swimming is a measure of culture. How it helped us today is
beyond the skills we learned from our ancestors. I have also learned the origins and the evolution
of competitive swimming.
MODULE 1

UNIT 1: Facilities and equipment of Swimming

Activity 1.
What are the facilities of swimming? Define each in your own understanding.
1. Swimsuit/Rashguards – The right swim gear must fit fine in the body and does not
make you uncomfortable when you swim.

2. Swimming cap – Swimming cap helps in preventing hair from covering the face.

3. Goggles – Goggles protect eyes from the chemicals inside the pool

4. Fins, Paddles, and Boards-

 Fins- increases the speed while swimming

 Paddles- are used for swimmers to develop their upper body strength as they
work back on muscles.

 Boards – are a flotation aid used to develop a swimmer’s kicking action.

5. Nose Clips – prevents water from entering the nose

Activity 2.
Tour around in your house and look for floating devices that you can use in order to float and
learn to swim. 
While I was searching for a floating devices in my house I found a box-like foam that can help
me float in the water.

Swimming gears and using the proper equipment provides safety benefits. I have also learned that
Swimming is a form of cardiovascular exercise that burns calories for weight control and works muscles
for toning and definition.
