Max Scheler: Values

1. Max Scheler argued that values come from an individual's pre-rational preference and exist in their own realm, separate from senses and intellect. 2. Values are "a priori" or beyond reason, anchored in the "logic of the heart" and are independent of whatever objects bear them. The bearer may change but not the value itself. 3. Scheler outlined five principles of values, including that the longer a value lasts, the harder it is to reduce, the fewer other values it depends on, the greater the satisfaction from its realization, and the less related it is to any carrier's existence, the higher the value.
