1.Gallblader Location
• gallbladder is located in the upper right part of your abdomen (belly). It
sits just under your liver or Right Hypocondriac Region of the anterior
abdominal wall.
2. Purpose of the Gallbladder
• Its main function is to store bile. Bile helps your digestive system break
down fats. Bile is a mixture of mainly cholesterol, bilirubin and bile
salts.
3. Difference between open and laparoscopic cholecystectomy

• Open cholecystectomy: With open surgery, your surgeon operates through

one large incision. Your surgeon may perform an open cholecystectomy if
your gallbladder is severely inflamed or scarred.
• Laparoscopic cholecystectomy: With laparoscopic surgery, your surgeon
operates through a few small incisions. Laparoscopic surgery generally leads
to a faster recovery, less pain and smaller scars. In most cases,
cholecystectomies will be performed laparoscopically.
According to Lujan 1998 Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a safe, valid
alternative to OC in patients with acute cholecystitis. The technique has a low
rate of complications, implies a shorter hospital stay, and offers the patient a
more comfortable postoperative period than OC.
Nursing management (Post OP)
➢ Demonstrate care of incisions, dressings, and drains. Promote good hand
hygiene.
(Promotes independence in care and reduces the risk of complications.)
➢ Advised patient to Empty your drain reservoir when you get up in the
morning and before you go to bed at night
➢ Support the abdomen when coughing, and ambulating.
(Facilitates more effective coughing, deep breathing, and activity)
➢ Emphasize the importance of maintaining a low-fat diet, eating frequent
small meals, and gradually reintroduction of foods or fluids containing
fats over a 4- to 6-month period.
(During the initial 6 mo after surgery, a low-fat diet limits the need for
bile and reduces discomfort associated with inadequate digestion of fats.)
➢ Advise patient you may take shower after the dressing is remove.
➢ Inform the patient that loose stools may occur for several months.
(Intestines require time to adjust to the stimulus of the continuous output
of bile.)
➢ Discuss avoiding or limiting the use of alcoholic beverages.
(Minimizes risk of pancreatic involvement.)
➢ Advise to Not bathing, immersion or swimming for at least two (2)
weeks.
➢ Inform patient that it is common to have discomfort on right shoulder,
chest tightness, bilateral shoulder for 24 to 48 hours after surgery,
gradually this will go away.
(It is caused by carbon dioxide used to inflate your abdomen during the
procedure.)
➢ Advise patient that Bowel irregularity is expected with pain medication.
