1. General

1.1 RELATED REQUIREMENTS

.1 Read this Section in conjunction with:

.1 Section 31 00 11 - Civil Earthwork Testing.

.2 Section 31 05 14 - Civil Fill Materials.

1.2 SECTION INCLUDES

.1 This Section includes requirements for all excavating, backfilling, filling, compacting and
grading outside perimeter of buildings or structures, except:

.1 building and structures excavating and backfilling,

.2 trench excavating and backfilling, and

.3 granular base construction for paving and surfacing.

1.3 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS

.1 All Code and Standard references refer to current updates, revisions, and adjustments in
effect as of date of contract.

.2 Withdrawn or obsolete Standards may still apply unless it has been replaced with a
different Standard, in which case the new Standard shall apply. Report any withdrawn
Standards to the Consultant for instruction.

.3 Perform work in accordance with the following Standards, except where specified
otherwise.

1.4 PROTECTION

.1 Establish the locations and extents of all underground services in the work area prior to
commencement of excavation work by notifying the applicable agencies. Clearly mark
such locations.

.2 Protect bottoms of excavations from softening. Should softening occur, remove softened
soil, and replace with Type 1 fill compacted to 98% Standard Proctor Maximum Dry
Density.

.3 Restrict traffic over completed or partially completed work after inclement weather or at
any time when there is tendency for subgrade material to work into base material.

1.5 GEOTECHNICAL REPORT

.1 Refer to most current Geotechnical Report included in these specifications.

2. Products

2.1 FILL MATERIALS

.1 Refer to Section 31 05  14 – Civil Fill Materials for fill material product specifications.

3. Execution

3.1 EXCAVATION

.1 Excavate to elevations and dimensions indicated on Drawings within a tolerance of

±50 mm.

3.2 PLACEMENT AND COMPACTION OF FILL MATERIALS

.1 Backfill excavations and fill to required subgrade elevations using fill materials specified
in Site Filling Schedule.

.2 Place fill materials in layers not exceeding loose thickness specified in Site Filling
Schedule.

.3 Compact each layer of fill to minimum percentages of Standard Proctor Density specified
in Site Filling Schedule.

3.3 GRADING

.1 Make changes in grade natural. Blend slopes into level areas.

.2 Unless otherwise indicated on Drawings, slope grade away from building minimum 1:20.

.3 Grade and shape surfaces within following tolerances from subgrade elevations indicated
on Drawings:

.1 Landscaped areas: ± 50 mm.

.2 Under paved areas: ± 50 mm.

.3 Under sidewalks: ± 50 mm.

3.4 SITE FILLING SCHEDULE

Under landscaped areas Minimun 95% SPD or as specified in Geotechnical Report

Under paved areas Minimum 150 mm uniform lifts compacted to 98% SPD
or as specified in Geotechnical Report
Under sidewalks Minimum 150 mm uniform lifts compacted to 98% SPD
or as specified in Geotechnical Report

3.5 VERIFICATION

.1 Contractor to appoint and pay a land surveyor licensed and registered in the Province of
Record for lot grading certificate at completion of project. Submit certificate to
Consultant for approval.

.2 Final certificate to be included in Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
