Bending Moment and Shear Force in

Beam
Subject: BMED Unit 2
Teacher: Mr. N. Griffiths
Department: Industrial Arts
Objectives
⚫ Define Bending Moment;
⚫ Define Shear Force;
⚫ Calculate shear force and bending moment in Beams;
⚫ Draw shear force and bending moments in beams.
Bending Moment B.M.
⚫ The bending moment at any section of a beam is
resultant moment about that section of all the forces
acting to one side of the section
Shear Force S.F.
⚫ The shear force at any section of a beam is the
resultant vertical force of all the forces acting to one
side of the section.
Activities
Fig. 277 Shows a cantilever
supporting a number of point
loads. Obtain the following
values:
1. Maximum bending moment
2. Maximum shear force
3. Bending moment at midpoint
of cantilever
4. Shear force at 1m from support
5. Construct bending moment and
shear force diagrams for the
cantilever.
Activity
A given steel beam is able to
resist safely a maximum
bending moment of 13.5 kNm.
The beam is used to carry the
loads shown in Fig. 279.
1. Check the safety of the beam
from bending moment point
of view.
2. Draw the B.M. and S.F.
diagram for the beam.
