Fees Payable by Full-time and Part-time Students

Registering in the 2021/2022 Academic Year

Definition of a Student
A person is considered to be a UWI student only after the completion of registration
and payment of all fees (tuition, compulsory and hall fees) for the semester. A
student who writes an examination(s) for a course(s) for which he/she was not
registered and paid for will not be credited for such course(s).

Accounts Receivable Hold (AR Hold)

An AR Hold is placed on the accounts of students who have not paid fees and/ or
submitted all required registration documents. This HOLD prevents registration,
access to grades and transcripts and can only be removed by the Bursary, Student
Accounts & Receivables Section.

GATE Hold (GT Hold)

The GATE policy of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, states
that, effective January 2015, “GATE no longer covers students whose cumulative
Grade Point Average (GPA) is below 2.0 at the end of the academic year”. Therefore,
a GT hold is placed on the accounts of these students to ensure that GATE is not
applied to their accounts. Such students will be required to pay their own tuition
fees.

Subsidies
Students receiving subsidies are required to pay the percentage of their tuition fee
as per their contract agreement.

Explanatory Notes
The University of the West Indies has a credit-based fee structure for
undergraduate programmes which will offer students the advantage and flexibility
of being able to pay in accordance with the number of credits chosen.

Students registered for 24 or more credits for the academic year are classified as full
time. Those registered for less than 24 credits are classified as part time.

Except for students from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Jamaica, students from
countries contributing to The University would be allowed to pay the lower fee.
These students must also provide a letter of sponsorship for economic cost from
their respective governments.

Undergraduate Programmes 2021 – 2022

Tuition fees for nationals of contributing countries sponsored by their governments

have been calculated at 20% of the 2021/2022 economic cost. Contributing
governments pay the remaining 80% of the economic cost on behalf of each
sponsored student. Fees for students from contributing countries, not sponsored by
their governments, who are admitted under the quota, have been calculated at
33.3% of the economic cost.

Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses (GATE)

(Citizens of Trinidad & Tobago only)
1. All students (citizens of T&T) who are accepted into a recognized tertiary
programme may apply to the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training
for funding to cover tuition fees via the GATE eService. To access the GATE
eService, students must register for a GATE eService ID at any of the ttconnect
Service Centres locations, or follow the COVID-19 alternative remote GATE
eService ID Registration guidelines with GATE to obtain a GATE ID number which
would then be used to apply for GATE funding on-line at www.e-gate.gov.tt

2. Students are required to submit a signed copy of their GATE application form
with their registration documents.

3. GATE funding is not retroactive. If a student fails to complete a GATE application

form upon registration as is required, a claim will not be accepted after the
semester has ended.

4. Students who have not maintained a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 as at the
end of the academic year 2020/2021 will be unable to access continued GATE
funding for Semester I of the academic year 2021/2022. However, if the
cumulative GPA increases to 2.0 or above at the end of Semester I, 2021/2022,
the student can apply for GATE funding for Semester II, 2021/2022 and must
submit a copy of the academic transcript to GATE e-Service for approval.

5. Effective academic year 2017/2018 and beyond, a means test is used to

determine the level of funding a student can access. Effective August 2020, the
means test funding policy was amended as follows:

I. All applications for GATE funding will include a mandatory means test.
Failure to complete the mean test will disqualify the application from being
considered for GATE funding.

II. Where the household income is below $10,000 per month students are
eligible for 100% GATE funding for tuition fees.

III. Where the household income is above $10,000 per month but less than
$30,000 per month students are eligible for 75% GATE funding for tuition
fees.

IV. Where the household income is above $30,000 per month but less than
$75,000 per month, students are eligible for 50% GATE funding for tuition
fees.

V. Where the household income is above $75,000 per month, students are
ineligible for GATE funding.

VI. Funding under the GATE programme is provided for no more than ONE (1)
programme up to the undergraduate level

VII. Students currently enrolled in undergraduate programmes continue to be

funded for the normal duration of the programme.

VIII. Students enrolled in programmes at regional campuses of The University

of the West Indies (UWI) that are offered at the UWI, St. Augustine
Campus, be provided equivalent level of funding at the St. Augustine
Campus.

IX. Students who are already in possession of undergraduate or postgraduate

qualifications, regardless of whether they were beneficiaries of the GATE
Programme, will not be able to access funding for any other programme.

6. Students repeating courses already covered by GATE will not be able to receive
funding again by GATE. Students will be required to pay for repeat courses as
GATE does NOT cover repeat courses.
7. Effective August 2017, only institutions and programmes accredited by the
Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACCT) will be funded.
