The industrial visit take part as an important role in B.Tech Food. The main objective of this
program is to know how carbonated soft drinks (CSD) are manufactured and its practices in the
context of Nepal.
This report is written in order to give the information about the carbonated soft drinks (CDS).
It also contains information about the industry, product.
In January 2023, we the student of NCFST had visited the factory of Bottler’s Nepal Terai
Limited. I take help from some sites to prepare this report by fulfilling the requirements. I am very
thankful to our teacher and college department for giving this opportunity to do this project. I hope
that this report will adequately meet it’s aim.

1. Introduction:

Coca-Cola, imported was first introduced in Nepal in 1973. Bottlers Nepal Limited (BNL)
started the local production of Coca-Cola in Nepal with its establishment in 1979 with
support from the Royal Family. The commencement of Coca-Cola production in Nepal
was done with Returnable Glass Bottles (RGB) at BNL, Balaju, Kathmandu. In 1986, a
new plant was added named Bottlers Nepal Terai Limited (BNTL) located at Bharatpur,
Chitwan. The plant started with 250ml glass line and they furbished their products with
PET line and ASSP line in 2013 and 2019 respectively.

BNTL ensures that the quality of the product is maintained irrespective of financial losses. The
quality and safety are the two pillars that is never compromised inside and outside thepremises.
BNTL has standardized its products, manufacturing process, business proceduresaccording to
―KORE‖ (Standard of Coca-Cola‘s Operating Requirements) which are audited frequently.

2. Objectives:

1. To broaden the knowledge and improve the skills on industrial operations and get acquainted
with the industrial environment
2. To learn about the culture, norms and values of a multinational company
3. To gain the practical knowledge regarding production, processing, quality control, quality
assurance
4. To gain knowledge about quality systems being implemented in the company
5. It helps to combine theoretical and practical knowledge.
6. To know the number of food technologists working in the industry

3. Products:
Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) of BNTL are-
1. Coca-Cola- 250ml RGB, 1L, 1.5L, 2.25 L PET, 500ml,250ml ASSP.
2. Fanta Orange- 250ml RGB, 1L, 1.5L, 2.25L PET,500ml, 250ml ASSP.
3. Sprite- 250ml RGB , 1 L, 1.5 L, 2.25 L PET,500ml, 250ml ASSP.

5. Kinley Soda- 250ml RGB, 500ml and 1L PET,250ml ASSP
6. Coke Zero - 250ml ,500ml ASSP

4. Production Details:
4.1 Syrup Room
Simple syrup is prepared by a mechanical sugar dissolving system. A single batch can produce simple syrup
of 3 batches of any flavor. Simple syrup and final syrup preparation for carbonated beverages is as shown
in following flow diagram

4.1.1 syrup storage

Syrup is prepared on the day of manufacturing, if somehow, they are not used, then the following
condition should be made.
Coca Cola - It can be stored up to 60 hrs. And this time can be extended if the syrup is chilled
between 4-10°C.
Fanta orange, Sprite: - These must be used within 48 hrs. if stored at temperature <25°C.

4.1.2 Key control points in syrup room

o Syrup pasteurization temperature
o Degree Brix and volume
o FIFO (concentrate) The monitoring parameters in syrup room are:
• Age/ Microbiology
• Beverage Brix/ Taste
• Appearance

4.2 RGB Line (Refillable Glass Bottles)
The production of the Bottlers Nepal (Terai) Limited (BNTL) is started from the entry of empty
bottles which is taken to bottle washing section by fork lifter.

4.3 Affordable Small Sparkling Packages (ASSP Line):
This is highly sophisticated and first launched plant in BNTL all over Nepal. As, glass bottles are
riskier and more hazardous to our health if present in product. To overcome this problem, PET
Bottles are manufactured. Although, PET bottles are available, the main objective of this newly
launched project is to extend the shelf life of the bottles up to 6 months from 3 months.
SiO₂ is coated that covers the oxygen transfer pores inside the bottles, so Oxygen Transmission
Rate is decreased. In ASSP bottles three layers of coating that is
 Adhesive layer (HMDSO +O₂)
 Barrier layer (HMDSN + O₂)
 Top layer ( HMDSO + Argon)

4.4 PET Line (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

It produces different products like:

 Coca- cola  Fanta Orange
 Sprite  Kinley Water
Of sizes 500ml, 1L, 1.5L, and 2.25L for each above mention product. PET line runs in the
principle of 45:36:8 which indicate the number of rinsed, filler and corking respectively. The
capacity of filler is 100bpm. PET line consists of a blow mold which can blow 8 preforms at a
time. The weight of preforms is 27g, 31g and 48g, and so on for 500ml, 1L, 1.5L, and 2.25L
respectively. PET bottles have higher GTR than RGB, that‘s why the rate of carbonation is
higher in PET as compared to RGB.

6. Conclusion:
My site visit to Bottler’s Nepal Terai Limited was very beneficial. I learned about manufacture
process of carbonated soft drinks (CSD) and their challenges. It was an excellent opportunity to
experience industrial visit. The products of the company have big market in different places of
Nepal.
