Activity 3.2 The Female Reproductive System

Learning Objective: Describe the parts of the reproductive system and their functions - S10LT-
llla-33

The female reproductive system is made up of the internal and external sex organs that function in
the reproduction of new offspring. Its functions are to produce female sex cells, receive sperm cells
from the male and nurtures the development of and provides nourishment for the new individual. It
consists of the ovaries, oviducts (Fallopian tubes), uterus, vagina & external genitalia.
The female reproductive system has the following functions:
● produce female sex cells receives sperm cells from males; and
● nurtures the development of and provides nourishment to the new individual.

The female reproductive system, is also regulated by hormones. These hormones are
estrogen and progesterone. The follicles produce hormones that control the growth and release of
eggs from the ovaries. While other hormones prepare the uterus so a baby can grow in it, other
hormones still control the stretching of the uterus during pregnancy.

> The female reproductive system provides several functions. The ovaries produce the egg cells,
called the ova or oocytes. The oocytes are then transported to the fallopian tube where fertilization
by a sperm may occur. The fertilized egg then moves to the uterus, where the uterine lining has
thickened in response to the normal hormones of the reproductive cycle. Once in the uterus, the
fertilized egg can implant into thickened uterine lining and continue to develop. If implantation does
not take place, the uterine lining is shed as menstrual flow. In addition, the female reproductive
system produces female sex hormones that maintain the reproductive cycle.

During menopause, the female reproductive system gradually stops making the female hormones
necessary for the reproductive cycle to work. At this point, menstrual cycles can
become irregular and eventually stop. One year after menstrual cycles stop, the woman is
considered to be menopausal.
