The Reproductive System

Let Us Discover

Hormones play an important role in both male and female reproductive systems.
These are chemical substances produced in the body that affect various processes
as they regulate and balance the functioning of organs, tissues, and cells. They
greatly influence growth, appearance, emotions, and reproductive functions.
Reproduction is a vital process controlled by hormones in most organisms including
humans. Understanding more about hormones, be familiar first with the specific parts
and functions of the female and male reproductive system.

Activity 1: WE ARE MATCH!
Direction: Examine the diagrams of the male and female reproductive system in
page 1 and try to answer Activity 1. In Column A is a list of organs while in Column B
is the function of each organ. Write the answer in the space provided before the
number.
Column A (Organ) Column B (Function)
____1. Testes A. It deposits sperms into the vagina
during mating.
____2. Uterus B. It carries sperm from testes to urethra.

____3. Fallopian tube C. It is a sac of skin that holds the testis.

____4. Vagina D. It produces egg cells.

____5. Scrotum E. It secretes a fluid that makes up most of

the components of the semen.
____6. Vas deferens F. It secretes a slightly alkaline milky fluid
that is discharge as part of the semen.
____7. Seminal vesicle G. It is the pathway through which a baby
leaves a woman’s body during
childbirth.
____8. Prostate gland H. It transports sperm toward the egg cell.

____9 Ovary I. It serves as the site of egg implantation;

it is where the fertilized egg develops.
____10. Penis J. It produces the sperm cells.

Hormones play a vital role in honing the primary and secondary sex
characteristics of humans. The major development of these characteristics happens
during puberty. Puberty starts when a child’s body begins to change in preparation
for adulthood. Physical changes in puberty include primary and secondary sexual
characteristics. The difference between the two is that primary sex characteristics
are processes related to the sex organs which are present at birth and mature when
sex hormones are released, whereas secondary sex characteristics mature during
puberty. In general, hormones keep the reproductive system properly functioning.

Activity 2: WHERE DO I BELONG?

Direction: Inside the box are the attributes or characteristics of human changes and
development during puberty. Identify the effects of the hormone on female and male
reproductive systems in primary and secondary sex characteristics. Group them into
male and female sex characteristics. Write your answer in the space provided.

growth of scrotum and testes increase the size of vagina and uterus
start to produce sperm menstrual cycle starts
enlargement of breast growth of pubic hair

Hormones released by the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary as well as hormones

from reproductive tissues and organs control the overall functioning of the male and
female reproductive cycle. The function of the hypothalamus is to monitor the need
for Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) hormones
made and released from the anterior pituitary. These two hormones cause the
formation of sperm and maturation of egg for release and possible fertilization.

In the male, FSH and LH stimulate Sertoli cells and interstitial cells of Leydig in
the testes to facilitate sperm production. The Leydig cells produce testosterone,
which is responsible for the secondary sexual characteristics of males.

In females, the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
cause estrogen and progesterone to be produced. These hormones regulate the
female reproductive system into two, the ovarian cycle and the menstrual cycle.
When the ovaries lose their sensitivity to both FSH and LH, menopause occurs.
When this happens, the female reproductive cycles start to slow down or eventually
stop.
