Doctors of Optometry are highly skilled and proficient in rendering quality eye care services to
meet the needs and expectations of those seeking their services . As part of helping them to play
their rehabilitative role as independent primary eye care providers, and in line with the mission
and vision of University of Benin. This will necessisitate the need for the the full involvement of
the Optometrists in fabrication of artificial eyes for ocular rehabilitative purposes.

Overview

Certain ocular disease conditions could result in loss of integrity of the ocular tissue. Depending
on the causative agent , its severity or the etiology of the condition, there could be a compromise
in the integrity of the eye ball. Conditions like an Endophthalmitis or a pan-ophthalmitis may
suffice. This will in turn result in an enucleation or an evisceration.

The loss of an eye from enucleation is aesthetically unpleasant as well as leading to collapse of
the walls of the orbit.

It is therefore necessary to forestall that thereby improving the quality of life of the individual

This course would help to broaden the development of the prosthetic ability of the Optometrists
(in and out of training) in the effective rehabilitation of the visually impaired

Course contents

History. The amputation. Psychology of the maimed patient. Rehabilitation. Anatomical


considerations. Most frequent causes of eye loss.

Techniques for the production of iris and sclera. Tools and materials... Techniques of
examination of the patient. Printing of the anophthalmic cavity.
Obtaining model wax pattern.. Obtaining of the sclera. Preparation of the Iris. Fixed iris.
Characterization of the sclera. Finishing and polishing. Sterilization.. Taking care of the
prosthesis.

Course Objectives

1. Describe the psychology of the maimed patient


2. Describe the most frequent causes of eye loss
3. Describe the tools and materials used in the production of iris and sclera
4. Describe the methods of printing of the anophthalmic cavity
5. Obtaining wax pattern for the preparation of sclera and iris
6. Methods of finishing and polishing.
7. Methods of sterilization and care of the prosthesis

1. Describing the kinds of psychological patterns of the patient with eye loss
2. Describe the causes of eye loss e.g infectitious, accidental, domestic etc
3. Specific printing patterns on the iris, sclera.
4. Specific finishing and polishing of the ocular prosthetics
5. Describing the tools and materials for the production of iris and sclera
