CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

Background of the study

The Accountancy Business and Management ( ABM ) strand marries creativity, mathematical
application, and business sense to prepare the best business professionals of tomorrow. Taking
ABM subjects in senior high school will introduce students to the concepts of financial
management, business management, corporate operations, and accounting. Students who select
this route will be prepared for colorful careers as managers, accountants, and business owners.
These ABM courses will equip them with the necessary industry know – how and skills to
perform well in their profession and run their businesses smoothly. The ABM strand is the
perfect combination of practical skills and application, as well as shaping senior high school
students to adopt the right mind set for crisis management and problem solving on the job and
behind their businesses.

One of the major benefit of taking ABM strand is having a small business it helps to develop
a strong foundation of accounting, management, and business principles. This foundation can
give business owners a better understanding and achieve desired results. Taking the ABM strand
while having a small business can have many benefits. It can give owners the necessary skills
and knowledge to manage their business more efficiently. Taking ABM strands empower
students to learn in the field of corporate world. ABM strands provides students with the skills
and knowledge about how to start a business and to become an effective business leader. Taking
ABM strands while having a small business has a lot benefits to students. We all know that we
are in a hard time or what we called crisis, some of students nowadays started small business to
support their studies financially and while taking or studying the strand of ABM, they have now
the knowledge that they need to manage it properly.
Taking the ABM strand while running a small business can be highly beneficial in a variety
of ways. For starters, it allows business owners to gain a better understanding of marketing and
analytics, which can greatly enhance their ability to create products and services that meet
customer needs. Furthermore, by using the information gleaned from the strand, entrepreneurs
can better assess their customer base and develop effective strategies for targeting their
demographic. Finally, the ABM strand provides an excellent opportunity to network with
professionals in the field, potentially providing valuable contacts and advice regarding day-to-
day operations.
Taking ABM strands empower students to learn in the field of corporate world. ABM strands
provides students with the skills and knowledge about how to start a business and to become an
effective business leader. Taking ABM strands while having a small business has a lot benefits to
students.

Having the idea of letting the ABM students manage a business while they are still studying
has a lot of advantage. It will help them to experience the real situation in handling a business. It
will improve their skills in dealing people. It will train them how to grow their business, and hot
to gain more profit. However, there is also disadvantage in this idea. Like, they will struggle how
to balance their time in studying and managing their business. It will give them a pressure time.
But one thing is for sure, it will help them to be a better entrepreneur in the near future.

Theoretical Framework

This chapter presents the theory that will support this study. “the study of entrepreneurship is
still in its “infancy” ( Brazeal and Herbert 1999 ) with the same said of the student entrepreneur
nearly fifteen years later. While plethora of academic and popular literature exists on
entrepreneurs and their success/failure, paucity of research exists on the cognitive processes
student entrepreneurs use to think, learn and work in a challenging environment requiring
balance work and study life. This is particularly important as in writing about own
entrepreneurial experiences, several famous entrepreneurs have included the period of time as
students. This includes the archetypal successful entrepreneur Richard Branson ( Branson 2009 ).
In the 21st century uncertainly about economic stability is rising. As a result, students are
“now faced with a wider variety of employment options, the probability of ending up with a
portfolio of jobs, more responsibility at work and more stress” ( Henry, Hill & Leitch 2005 )
making entrepreneurship a more appealing options for future graduates. Governments recognise
the importance of Students Entrepreneurs in the economy with the French government making
official the status of Students Entrepreneur. This includes providing financial support for
students with ideas as well as students considering setting up a business ( Lomas 2013 ) with an
ultimate goal off creating 20,000 jobs in ( Un nouveau statut pour les studiants-entrepreneurs,
2013 )

Entrepreneurs are defined in a multitude of ways in the literature. However, the same is not
true for student entrepreneurs. For Entrepreneurs they see themselves as “dream merchants”
( Purewal 2001 ) or they “build emerging businesses rather than extending and defending
existing business” ( Baghai and Coley 2000 ). A broader definition contends: “He isn’t only
interested in building businesses. He’s also the political organization, using it as a platform to
connect thinkers from other disciplines” ( Torenberg 2012 ). However, this study departs from
much of the previous work by exploring the students entrepreneur not just as a student attending
entrepreneurial classes but conducting business on/near campus or leading a campus enterprise
( voluntary association ) while simultaneously attending formal university award courses.

The key focus of this study is researching the lived experience of the student entrepreneur.
Furthermore, the nature of the lived experience allows an exploration of the cognitive processes
students entrepreneurs undertaking study at university use to learn new skills, generate
innovative solutions and balance study work life.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter attempts to review the relevant local to the international Literature and research
related to the present study the benefits of taking ABM strand while having a small business,
which critically reviewed by the researcher.

One of the most challenging part of in the field of having a small business while studying is
time management. On the other hand, they can also apply their knowledge about ABM to their
business. The Philippines began a senior high school (K-12) curriculum in 2016 with the purpose
of developing entrepreneurial students who are holistically developed, equipped with 21st –
century skills, and prepared for the future. This study assessed the ABM students, its influencing
factors, motivators and obstacles. It was concluded that (1) rather than working as an employee
in a corporation, students-respondents want to start their own business and be their own boss;
and the course they attended had an effect on their self-efficacy in making professional
selections. (2) they looked to their family for advice on how to become an entrepreneur one day,
which could be because their family has a business. (3) motivation factors show that students-
respondents do not dwell on focusing personal gaining of status they will achieve then they
become entrepreneur as they are motivated to give support for potential entrepreneurs, use their
creative talent, and take risk, and (4) to establish a business one needs have sufficient savings to
empty as capital as well as entrepreneurial skills. It is also crucial to take a business while
studying because they need a right mind set, time management and commitment on what they
do. According to Justine G. Longerecker, J William Petty, Leslie E. Palieh and Frank Hoy,
Realize your dream for small business success with the market leading book. SMALL
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT LAUNCHING AND GROWING ENTREPRENURIAL
VENTURES, 17E provides the practical concepts, entrepreneurial insights, and resources you
find essential both now and throughout your management future. Having a small business
management delivers solid coverage of the fundamentals of business management as it teaches
you not only how to start business, but also how to manage, grow and harvest a business. This
market leading text places you in the role of decision maker, allowing you to immediately apply
what you’ve learned to current challenges in today`s small businesses. Having a small business
help you to plan your future, to create better, to analyse and to enjoy what you are doing.

Small business refers to a business enterprise that correctly adopts and practices the principle
of entrepreneurship Advana, N.V (year)However, entrepreneurs generally consider "being their
own bosses" major advantage of this model is more about the reality of this later. Entrepreneurs
sometimes follow principles, advice and business practices taught to them by others, but they are
theones who make these decisions and create these frameworks. Additionally, previous research
studies have suggested that entrepreneurship education plays a vital role in creating individuals
interest in Entrepreneurship. According1 The Perception of ABM students’ towards Business
Management......to Olawale, et al., (2014) business owners should be involved in
entrepreneurship education. Students need to be involved in internship activities with business to
gain real practical business experience. Entrepreneurship education should be extended to all
students’ entrepreneurs by the universities to improve their competencies. In relation to that,
Entrepreneurship education encourages students’ to take on entrepreneurship as a career and
gives students’ the skill needed such as how to prepare a business plan, however,
entrepreneurship education does not seem effective in helping students’ to meet people with
good business ideas. According to Naila aaijaz, and Dahlan Bin Ibrahim (2012), parent’s
education does not greatly influence the attitude of students’ towards entrepreneurial ventures,
andthen education does play a major role in building future entrepreneurs. According to Henry
(2004), students’ tend to search for such Business education, which would equip them with basic
and necessary knowledge about Entrepreneurship to run their own business.

The skills young people have today are vital too. This generation has grown up with the
Internet, smart phones and the instantaneous nature of social networking sites. They are finding
ways to work smarter not harder. They are fiercely ambitious and do not want to waste time. The
benefits are considerable as young entrepreneurs are likely to create jobs that employ other
young people. They are more responsive to new economic opportunities and trends and are more
innovative. Young people with entrepreneurial skills also make better employees. An
employable graduate might not be enterprising, but an enterprising graduate will be
employable.Student‐run businesses are actively encouraged and provided with support through a
wide variety of programmes, competitions and grants aimed at fostering enterprise and
entrepreneurship among students. In many business schools, Centres of Enterprise and
Entrepreneurship or special interest groups have been established to encourage students, faculty
members and members of the local community to create new enterprises and to develop existing
enterprises. Programmes related to these initiatives include coaching to would be entrepreneurs,
seed funding grants, competitions, enterprise summer schools and more.

Zamboanga Del Sur.
Research Respondents

The respondents of this study is the students of grade 10 and grade 11 ABM. In order to collect
data from grade 10 and 11 ABM students who have been chosen to respond, our research will be
accomplished.

Sampling Procedure

(1)Accountancy, Business, and Management students are expected to be future entrepreneurs

who are skilled in handling business. As observed, many students sell retailed goods inside the
school to financially support their studies. This study aimed to identify the benefits of taking
ABM strand while having a small business.(2) This research focused on the significant
experiences of respondents about handling business while studying ABM. Purposive sampling
was used to focus on the particular characteristics of this group of respondents. The respondents
were composed of grade 10 and grade 11 ABM students from Blancia College Foundation
Incorporated. Half of each group own a small business and the other half do not. The researchers
used a questionnaire to gather information.
(3) Most of the students stated that having a small business while studying give them advanced
knowledge of business and they can support their studies financially. Their experiences in selling
gave them ideas on how to manage their future businesses and cope with the trends. Those
students who preferred to have no business while studying stated that they can simply focus on
their studies and perform school-related activities.(4) Both groups of respondents have
advantages on their chosen path. However, handling businesses while still studying could give
students the first-hand experience of their lessons. This gave them simple know-how in the field
of entrepreneurship. Parents are also encouraged to support their children in their business
endeavors.

Research Instrument
In the case of the study Benefits of taking ABM strand while having a small business at Blancia
College Foundation Incorporated the research instrument used may have been form of survey
questionnaires with choices being provided from which the respondents can choose from. The
survey may have included questions related to participants' demographics, such as name, age,
and gender. The survey may have also included sampling questions. Additionally, the survey
may have included closed-ended questions where participants were able to provide more detailed
responses about their experiences about taking ABM strand while having a small business. The
research instrument may have been tested with a small group of participants to ensure that it was
clear and easy to understand.Equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge that you will
need in order to succeed in the business world (a) better understanding of how businesses work,
(b) advanced knowledge, (c) Business Communication Skills. It encourage the ABM strand is
perfect for those who want to have a future career in business

Data Gathering Procedure

To acquire this study, we undergo such research to make sure that this experiment will be
successful. First, we asked grade 10 and grade 11 students if they have their own business, if
they are favorable in getting a business while studying in their strand. We get different of
feedbacks and mostly some of them are favorable to the idea. But they are students that thinking
twice to the question. Because they're thinking how to handle their time. The academics matters
to them. Which is also very important for them . Second, we also need the opinion of the parents
regarding this idea of their children having a business while taking the strand. But we cannot
change the fact that there are people will contradict to the idea. Because according to the parents,
there is a 50% percentage of successing the business while taking a strand. And who will
shoulder the loss of money if the business will fail? Instead of paying it to the tuition fee it just
gone for the failed studies. Upon analysing their opinion, We conclude that getting business
while taking the ABM strand is very difficult to the academics because they are minding the
business. However, there is also an advantage to this study. Which is the student will gain more
knowledge how to handle the business. And it will prepare them be needing their time
management, effort, dedication and passion in handling a business while taking their strand.
Data Analysis

As a researcher we need to gather more data regarding on our topics. But before that we need
to consider many things.Such us time, effort and respect others opinion. Before that you need to
embrace what your researching for. We need lots of knowledge in considering that people you
will encounter will question you regarding the topics. You need to study more about the matter.
And you need to deepen your research for you to get the answer of the crucial things will happen
to your research. And lastly, stay on your research goal. Always think the negative and positive
side of the study.
