Task 1 2

Agency selection

So the agency that I have chosen for my paper is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast

Virginia, mainly the one on Rosemont Road. I have been given an opportunity to evaluate the

program by becoming a volunteer with the program so I can interview staff. This program will

help me see how effectively an after-school child through a young adult program helps the

development of growing children.

Mission and Purpose

The mission statement that the Boys and Girls Club provides is to “provide a safe place,

caring adult mentors, fun and friendship, and high-impact youth development programs on a

daily basis during critical non-school hours.” (Boys & Girls Clubs of America - Providing Millions of

Kids and Teens a Safe Place to Develop Essential Skills, Make Lasting Connections and Have Fun., 2023).

This agency aligns with my future career aspirations by providing help and programs to young

adults that might need more stability in their lives. This agency wants to help young people reach

their full potential as productive and responsible citizens within their communities.

Population

So, the Boys and Girls Club of America has been around for more than 150 years. As of

today they have 4,300 clubs and provide services to almost 4 million young people within the

United States. The demographic for the Boys and Girls Club ranges from ages 6 through 18 and

communities from every culture. They are also military-connected so they even help military

dependents wherever they are stationed. The Boys and Girls Club doesn’t focus on one

demographic; they want to help all young people no matter where their background is from so

they have a very wide diversity of cultures, races, and economic statuses within their agency.
Task 1 3

Geographic

The Boys and Girls Club as a whole company works mainly within the borders of the

United States, but I will be focusing on the Rosemont Unit. This location is at 1505 Competitor

Court Virginia Beach, VA 23453. There are multiple Boys and Girls Clubs that service the

Hampton Roads area, but this one is providing services to the young people within the Virginia

Beach district. It is actually the only Boys and Girls Club within the Virginia Beach border. It is

located near the Green Run high school area which is known in the Virginia Beach area for

having low-income housing so this program has very direct contact with young people that could

use the services they provide.

Reflection

I chose this agency because I truly value the work that they do and the services they

provide for the young people within my own community. It also reflects my personal aspirations

for my future. I want to use my degree in Human Services to progress in the field of psychology,

especially pediatric psychology. I want to help young people with their mental health and allow

them to gain a voice that they might not have in society. Within the past decade mental health

reports have been the highest it has ever been within the United States and a main portion of that

statistic is people under the age of 18. I believe this agency allows young people to find a

creative, active, and relaxing outlet for any mental health issues that they might have.
