Agency Selection

The agency that I selected is the Southside Boys and Girls club located in Norfolk,

Virginia. I have contacted Alycia Archer about the assignment and discussed that I would like to

interview her as well as observe a day to day at the club. I explained to Alycia that I would like

to be able to provide feedback based on my observations and she was very open with the idea.

The mission of the Southside Boys and Girls club is “To empower every Club member, through

safe and impactful experiences, to graduate high school with a plan for college or career,

contribute to their community and live a healthy life.” (Ssbandgc, 2023, p.5) The population they

serve are children of all ages in the area around Berkley Norfolk. This club was created in 1971

because the Berkley citizens were concerned with the young men in the community beginning to

show delinquent behavior. Now the club is open to all students until they graduate high school.

Berkley is one of the most historic neighborhoods in Norfolk as well as one of the largest. The

Berkley neighborhood is known to be a lower-middle class which means it is a below average

income neighborhood. I would like to become a Mental Health Counselor for children so I think

going into the Boys and Girls club will allow me to learn how to connect with them. I also will

be able to see what helps get the children involved and interested in certain activities and what

deters them from doing things. This agency has an amazing mission and is known for always

giving back to the community. I plan on using this agency again for my Human Services

Internship and I am very excited. I cannot wait to give back to the community as well as the

children and help them keep striving for greatness.
