A dietitian is planning a meal that supplies certain quantities of vitamin C, calcium, and

magnesium. Three foods will be used, their quantities measured in milligrams. The nutrients
supplied by one unit of each food and the dietary requirements are given in the table below.
Nutrient Food 1 Food 2 Food 3 Total Required (mg) Vitamin C 40 40 80 580 Calcium 50 60
120 845 Magnesium 20 35 60 430 Write the augmented matrix for this problem. Once you
have the augmented matrix, use the "RREF" operation of your calculator to answer the
following: (1) What quantity (in units) of Food 1 is necessary to meet the dietary
requirements? (2) What quantity (in units) of Food 2 is necessary to meet the dietary
requirements? (3) What quantity (in units) of Food 3 is necessary to meet the dietary
requirements?

Let x units of Food1, y units of Food2 and z units of Food3 be required to meet the dietary requirements
The solution to the system is x = 5/2, y = 4, z = 4
2.5 units of Food1, 4 units of Food2 and 4 units of Food3 be required to meet the dietary requirements.
Answer: (1) 2.5 units (2) 4 units (3) 4 units.
