1.1. A talkative classroom is good for the very simple reason that children learn and understand better
when they take part in conversations. English is a great example. Learners that do not have an English
background struggle to learn it. Therefore if you participate in talking English in the class you will learn
and understand it faster. Some learners will be more talkative and others will listen more closely, but it
doesn’t matter. The ones who listen will learn how words are pronounced and ht they mean by just
listening.

You can make up fun stuff like:

Who talks first?

You can let the learner whose birthday is next talk first or start at the right and move left or simple
things like whose hair is the longest or shortest and that is how they are allowed to talk in the
classroom.

Write, pair, share

I would give the learners something to write and walk around in the room looking over their shoulders. I
would compliment then and why they struggle I would give them ideas of what to say. In this way you
help the learners who do not have a lot of confidence as well. I am also able to see how many and who
is stuck and then I can help them and see if we can move on or if we need to stay ere a bit.

Pairs and squires

I divide the learners into pairs and they must work with that person for the whole week. Sometimes I
even squire those (2 pairs). This way they learn each other’s name with the correct spelling. They can
even invent a handshake so that they can greet each other in the morning or after school. This way they
start to build a relationship with everyone in their group and they help each other with pronunciation
and so on.

Nonverbal agreement or disagreement

In this way no one needs to talk which helps the shy learners. They can just nod to say “yes” and shake
to say “no.” This gives me immediate feedback.

Metacognitive goal setting

In 2 weeks time I give them a certain topic which they need to discuss with their group. This gives all of
them a chance to talk. When I give class about this topic they are allowed to make notes by themselves.
After I am done they may ask questions and help each other to answer the question that I gave to them.
This improves their teamwork and socializing skills.

Talking piece

Especially with the grade 4s I give them a ball and the only one that may talk will be the one holding the
ball. After one is finished I let them pass on the ball to someone else. The reason for this is that the
grade 4s are very eager to talk and will talk the whole day f not stopped. They are a very energetic group
and I have found that in this way they listen and understand better.

Music

When I want my learners to hear a lot of ideas I let them write down their thoughts and ideas and to
walk to a lot of other learners as fast as they can and write one idea of all the learners they went to. I
sometimes do it with music so that they need to hurry with it before the song is over. This helps them to
talk better and faster. They also learn how to work against time.
1.2. It improves learner’s interest and engagements:

Classes that are given and have a bit of a discussion afterwards can help the learners to focus and can
help them to remember these discussions for the future. When each learner gives a answer they see it
from different perspectives.

Gives the teacher feedback

When the learners give their answers and discuss it, the teacher can see if they understand what was
just explained. When it happens that one learner gives the wrong answer the teacher can help them to
correct that answer.

Promotes preparation

If you as a teacher do a lot of discussions the learners will start coming to your class prepared to answer
a question rather than to ask a lot of questions about the class.

Develops oral skills

Speaking in groups is very important. You as a teacher should make learners comfortable to speak in
front of their fellow learners. Things like public speaking and prepared reading will get better the more
they practice it.

Controls the environment in the classroom.

When you see a learner is dwelling off and is not paying attention you can call him or her and ask a
question to get them back on track. Because of that the learners will pay more attention to what you say
in the future as for they do not want to be called out again.

1.3. I think some of the challenges is that you may have that one learner that takes everything as a joke
and will influence the others learners. If you cannot take control over this situation quickly, you will lose
your whole class and it would be very difficult to regain control over them. More things that I think can
go wrong are:

 Misunderstandings - When you are giving class and one learner asks a question and the others
talk too much this learner might get confused and do not understand exactly what to do.
 Won’t pay attention –When the learners talk too much other will not stay focused and will pay
more attention to the discussions that the other learners are talking about rather than to listen
to what the teacher says.
 Not finishing the curriculum –Learners can only do one thing. They can either work or talk. The
two does not go together ever. When they talk too much there is not enough time to do all the
work that needs to be done and you won’t finish all the work for the y6ear which will let the
learners fall behind.
 Conflict -One learner may say something that another does not like and there may be conflict
between them that will disturb the other learners in class as well.
 Disabilities – If you have a special need learner with hearing problems, he/she can get lost
within the crowd when the others are all taking together. They will not understand and will have
a very difficult time to do the work or even understand it, because they did not hear wat is
expected of them. That child will have a disadvantage.
