VOCABULARY PHRASE USAGE

‫وﻗﺘﯽ‬
vaqti means "when" or "whenever" in Persian. However, it is not used as the interrogative or
questioning "when," like in, "When will you go?" But it's used for mentioning a time that's already
known, like in "the day when you go." It's also used as the English word "whenever," meaning "each time
when..."

PERSIANPOD101.COM ABSOLUTE BEGINNER S1 #7 3

‫ﺑﺰرگ ﺷﺪن‬
Bozorg Shodan means "to grow up" or "to grow old." It is composed of the two words shodan, meaning
"to become," and bozorg, meaning "big." But instead of "becoming big," it usually creates the image of
"growing old" in the listener, although it can also be used for physically becoming bigger. vaqti bozorg
besham means "when I become older."

‫ﺗﻮ ﭼﯽ؟ )ﺗﻮ ﭼﻄﻮر؟( ا‬

To chi? or To chetor? means "And You?," "What about you?," or "How about you?" Literally, to means
"you," chi means "what," and chetor means "how." So it's equal to "you what?" or "you how?" in Persian.
When someone says something about themselves and they want to know the same thing about the
other person, they ask this question.

GRAMMAR

The Focus of this Lesson is Talking About Occupations.

‫وﻗﺘﯽ ﺑﺰرگ ﺷﺪی ﻣﯽﺧﻮاﻫﯽ ﭼﻪ ﮐﺎره ﺑﺸﯽ؟‬
"What will you be when you grow up?"

When talking about occupations, the key question is ‫( ﻣﯽﺧﻮاﻫﯽ ﭼﻪ ﮐﺎره ﺑﺸﯽ‬mikhaahi chekaare beshi?),
meaning, "What do you want to be / become?" ‫( ﻣﯽﺧﻮاﻫﯽ‬mikhaahi) means "You want," ‫( ﭼﻪ ﮐﺎره‬chekaare)
means "what" (used only for jobs), and ‫( ﺑﺸﯽ‬beshi) is the conditional tense of "to become" for the
second person or "you." mikhaahi is just another decided verb form that is placed at the beginning of
the sentence, unlike the usual. But beshi comes at the end, just like any other verb in Persian.

The answer: "I want to be..."

The answer to the question ‫ ﻣﯽﺧﻮاﻫﯽ ﭼﻪ ﮐﺎره ﺑﺸﯽ‬is ‫ ﺑﺸﻢ‬... ‫( ﻣﯽﺧﻮام‬mikhaam ... besham), meaning "I want
to become ..." It always follows a simple formula, which is: ‫( ﻣﯽﺧﻮام‬mikhaam) / "I want" + [occupation
name] + ‫( ﺑﺸﻢ‬besham) / "become." For example, "I want to be a doctor" becomes ‫ﻣﯽﺧﻮام دﮐﺘﺮ ﺑﺸﻢ‬
(mikhaam doctor besham). We put "doctor" as an occupation between "I want" and "become."
Remember that the same verbs can change for each pronoun.

For example:

‫وﻗﺘﯽ ﺑﺰرگ ﺷﺪی ﻣﯽﺧﻮاﻫﯽ ﭼﻪ ﮐﺎره ﺑﺸﯽ؟‬

‫ﮐﺎره ﺑِﺸﯽ؟‬
ِ ‫ﭼﻪ‬
ِ ‫َوﻗﺘﯽ ﺑ ُ ُﺰرگ ﺷُ ﺪی ﻣﯽﺧﻮاﻫﯽ‬

vaqti bozorg shodi mikhaahi chekare beshi?

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

CULTURAL INSIGHT
What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

"What do you want to be?" is a title often given to students in school as the subject of a composition for
class. Most children want to become an engineer, doctor, or teacher, which are the most popular
occupations among families. Some other occupations like acting are still less supported by parents.
Starting in high school, teenagers have to choose a field of study that interests them and leads them
into searching and knowing about more occupations, like arts, physics, mathematics, etc. And lately, the
number of special training schools that educate students in more detailed fields is increasing. However,
despite all of this, a lack of jobs and employment still sometimes affects society.
